Which school districts and organizations sponsor visas for high school teachers in Tennessee?
Metro Nashville Public Schools, Memphis-Shelby County Schools, Knox County Schools, and Shelby County Schools are among the largest employers with documented international hiring activity. Charter networks operating in Nashville and Memphis have also sponsored teachers in shortage subject areas. Sponsorship is most common for STEM subjects, special education, and English language learner instruction, where qualified domestic candidates are harder to recruit.
Which visa types are most common for high school teacher roles in Tennessee?
The H-1B is the most common visa for high school teachers, classifying the role as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. The J-1 Exchange Visitor visa is also widely used, particularly through cultural exchange programs that place international teachers in U.S. classrooms for one to three years. Some districts participate in J-1 teacher exchange programs specifically designed for secondary educators.
Which cities in Tennessee have the most high school teacher visa sponsorship jobs?
Nashville and Memphis account for the largest share of Tennessee's visa-sponsored teaching positions, driven by the size and diversity of their school districts. Knoxville is a secondary hub, supported by Knox County Schools and proximity to the University of Tennessee pipeline. Chattanooga has seen growing demand as Hamilton County Schools expands programs in STEM and career and technical education.
How to find high school teacher visa sponsorship jobs in Tennessee?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, allowing you to filter high school teacher roles by state, including Tennessee. Because sponsorship availability is not always disclosed in standard job postings, Migrate Mate surfaces roles from employers with a documented history of sponsoring teachers, saving significant research time for candidates in STEM, special education, and bilingual instruction.
Are there any Tennessee-specific considerations for high school teachers seeking visa sponsorship?
Tennessee requires all public school teachers to hold a valid Tennessee teaching license, which involves an application to the Tennessee Department of Education and may require credential evaluation for degrees earned outside the United States. International teachers should verify their foreign degree meets Tennessee's licensure standards before applying. Districts in shortage subjects, particularly secondary math, science, and special education, are more likely to support the sponsorship process for otherwise-qualified candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored high school teacher jobs in Tennessee?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
