Which companies and school districts sponsor visas for high school teachers in Texas?
The largest sponsors are typically major urban independent school districts, including Houston ISD, Dallas ISD, San Antonio ISD, and Fort Worth ISD. Charter networks such as KIPP Texas and Harmony Public Schools have also sponsored international teachers. Private and international schools in cities like Houston and Dallas are additional sources, particularly for candidates with bilingual credentials or specialized STEM backgrounds.
Which visa types are most common for high school teacher roles in Texas?
The H-1B visa is the most common pathway, as teaching at the secondary level generally qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. The J-1 visa is also widely used through cultural exchange programs that place international teachers in U.S. schools. Some districts work with specific J-1 program sponsors to bring educators from countries with teacher shortage agreements.
Which cities in Texas have the most high school teacher sponsorship jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio consistently have the highest volume of teaching positions, driven by large district enrollment and chronic shortages in bilingual education, math, and science. Austin has grown as an additional hub given its expanding population. Smaller metros like El Paso and Fort Worth also show demand, particularly for Spanish-bilingual teachers and special education specialists.
How to find high school teacher visa sponsorship jobs in Texas?
Migrate Mate is a job board specifically built for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S. You can filter directly for high school teacher roles in Texas to see districts and schools actively open to sponsoring. This saves significant time compared to manually screening postings, since sponsorship willingness is already a core filter. It is particularly useful if you are tracking roles across multiple Texas cities at once.
Are there state-specific considerations for international high school teachers pursuing sponsorship in Texas?
Texas requires state teacher certification through the Texas Education Agency, and international candidates must have their foreign credentials evaluated for equivalency before applying. Districts sponsoring H-1B teachers must pay the prevailing wage as determined by Department of Labor standards for the relevant occupation and region. Texas's bilingual education mandate creates consistent demand for teachers certified in Spanish-English instruction, which can strengthen a sponsorship case with many districts.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored high school teacher jobs in Texas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
