Which companies sponsor visas for scientists in Tennessee?
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is one of Tennessee's largest sponsors of scientist visas, particularly for research physicists, chemists, and materials scientists. Vanderbilt University Medical Center, UT-Battelle, and companies in Memphis's biomedical and agricultural science sectors also have established H-1B sponsorship histories. Large pharmaceutical and contract research organizations with Tennessee operations have sponsored scientists across biology, chemistry, and environmental science disciplines.
Which visa types are most common for scientist roles in Tennessee?
The H-1B is the most common visa for scientist roles in Tennessee, covering specialty occupations that require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific scientific field. Researchers at national laboratories or universities may also qualify for the O-1A, which is based on extraordinary ability. Scientists employed by Tennessee's public research universities may find cap-exempt H-1B sponsorship available through those institutions.
Which cities in Tennessee have the most scientist sponsorship jobs?
Knoxville and the Oak Ridge corridor lead in sponsored scientist positions due to the concentration of federal research facilities and University of Tennessee affiliates. Nashville follows closely, driven by its health sciences and biotechnology employers. Memphis supports sponsored roles in agricultural science, biomedical research, and university-affiliated labs. Smaller markets like Chattanooga have emerging advanced manufacturing and environmental science opportunities.
How to find scientist visa sponsorship jobs in Tennessee?
Migrate Mate filters scientist job listings specifically to employers with active visa sponsorship histories in Tennessee, saving time compared to sorting through postings that don't address sponsorship. You can narrow results by scientific discipline and city, which is useful given how concentrated Tennessee's sponsorship activity is across Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis. Migrate Mate is updated regularly to reflect current openings from verified sponsoring employers.
Are there state-specific factors that affect scientist visa sponsorship in Tennessee?
Tennessee's federal research infrastructure, centered on Oak Ridge National Laboratory and its managing contractor UT-Battelle, creates sponsorship demand that is relatively stable compared to purely private-sector markets. Many positions at federally funded facilities may require security clearance eligibility, which can affect visa pathways for some candidates. Tennessee also has no state income tax, which is a financial consideration worth noting when evaluating total compensation for sponsored roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored scientist jobs in Tennessee?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
