Which companies sponsor visas for software systems engineers in Virginia?
Federal contractors and defense technology firms dominate visa sponsorship for software systems engineers in Virginia. Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton, General Dynamics IT, Raytheon Technologies, and SAIC regularly file H-1B visa petitions for systems engineering roles. Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, operating out of Northern Virginia, also sponsor software systems engineers. Many of these employers have long sponsorship histories documented in Department of Labor LCA disclosure data.
Which visa types are most common for software systems engineer roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is by far the most common visa category for software systems engineers in Virginia, as the role typically meets the specialty occupation standard requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, systems engineering, or a related field. L-1B visas appear for intracompany transfers at large defense and tech contractors. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for TN visa status under the engineer category.
Which cities in Virginia have the most software systems engineer sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, particularly Fairfax County and Arlington, concentrates the largest share of software systems engineer sponsorship roles in the state. McLean, Reston, Herndon, and Chantilly host major defense contractors and technology firms. The Richmond metro has a smaller but growing tech presence, and Hampton Roads sees demand tied to naval systems and defense work along the coast.
How to find software systems engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify software systems engineer roles in Virginia where employers are actively willing to sponsor. You can search by state and refine by role to surface positions from defense contractors, federal IT firms, and commercial tech employers in Northern Virginia and beyond, without sifting through listings that don't offer sponsorship.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for software systems engineer sponsorship roles?
Many software systems engineer positions in Virginia, particularly with federal contractors in Northern Virginia, require security clearances. Sponsoring an employee for a clearance while simultaneously petitioning for an H-1B adds complexity, and some employers restrict sponsorship to roles that do not require clearance eligibility. Virginia Tech and George Mason University supply a strong pipeline of international engineering graduates who actively pursue sponsorship through OPT before transitioning to H-1B status.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software systems engineer jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
