Position Overview
As a Senior Engineering Lead, you will be a hands-on technical leader within the Platforms & Infrastructure team in Enterprise Operations & Technology, helping a growing cloud platform organization raise its engineering maturity and delivery effectiveness.
This high-visibility role applies GenAI, AIOps, automation, and modern AWS engineering practices to reduce platform toil, remove operational delays, and design self-service, self-healing capabilities.
By codifying reusable patterns, automation frameworks, and guardrails, this role enables application teams to modernize with less platform friction while maintaining secure, scalable, and resilient outcomes in a regulated environment.
Our Impact:
Enterprise Operations & Technology enables Freddie Mac’s business through resilient operations, technology modernization, risk management, and platform innovation. Our teams deliver the capabilities, standards, and tools that help the enterprise operate securely, efficiently, and at scale.
Your Impact:
- Provide senior technical leadership to a maturing cloud platform team by establishing reusable patterns, reference architectures, automation, and implementation standards.
- Design self-service and self-healing platform capabilities that reduce manual intervention, ticket-driven support, operational delays, and recurring resiliency issues.
- Deliver AWS-native automation, serverless patterns, infrastructure as code, and code artifacts that create repeatable platform outcomes.
- Advance AIOps, GenAI, and intelligent automation across cloud databases, shared platform services, observability, and developer enablement capabilities.
- Establish engineering guardrails and operational patterns that improve reliability, scalability, security, compliance, and speed of delivery.
- Serve as an independent technical voice, challenging assumptions and defending architecture decisions with clear reasoning, evidence, and practical implementation.
- Represent engineering in leadership forums, contributing to roadmap planning, investment decisions, technology governance, and platform modernization strategy.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of related engineering, platform, or cloud technology experience; bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
- Deep AWS experience across cloud architecture, serverless services, scalable infrastructure, observability, and secure, resilient platform design.
- Strong hands-on proficiency with infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation/SAM, AWS CDK) and modern automation/scripting languages (Python, TypeScript/Node.js, Bash, SQL), with proven experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines.
- Working knowledge of cloud data platform technologies — including NoSQL and document databases (e.g., DynamoDB, MongoDB/DocumentDB), event streaming (e.g., Kafka/MSK, Kinesis), and emerging AI/GenAI services (e.g., Amazon Q, Bedrock) — with the ability to integrate them into secure, scalable platform solutions.
- Experience transitioning hosted, COTS, or vendor-managed capabilities toward AWS-native, serverless, event-driven, or cloud-native service patterns where appropriate.
- Strong understanding of DevOps, CI/CD, microservices, containers, Kubernetes, Docker, and related cloud-native technologies.
- Proven ability to research, prototype, and deliver solutions independently while creating reusable assets that improve team maturity and execution consistency.
- Strong enterprise technology judgment, including security, compliance, governance, resiliency, data infrastructure, and hybrid or multi-cloud deployment considerations.
Key to Success in this role
- Operates independently, moving from strategy to implementation without heavy direction.
- Makes defensible architecture tradeoffs across scalability, resilience, security, cost, compliance, and operability.
- Influences highly opinionated technical stakeholders through prototypes, data, clear reasoning, and credible hands-on execution.
- Elevates engineering teams through mentoring, design reviews, standards, and reusable assets.
- Applies a platform-as-product mindset, treating internal platform capabilities as customer-focused products with clear adoption, usability, reliability, and value outcomes.
- Communicates complex platform concepts clearly across engineering, product, security, risk, and leadership teams.

Which companies sponsor visas for technical leads in Virginia?
Northern Virginia's federal IT and defense contracting sector produces the highest volume of technical lead sponsorship. Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, General Dynamics Information Technology, and Perspecta are consistent sponsors. On the commercial side, Amazon Web Services has a major presence in Herndon and Arlington. Capital One's McLean headquarters and Freddie Mac also hire technical leads with visa sponsorship regularly.
Which visa types are most common for technical lead roles in Virginia?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa category for technical lead roles in Virginia, given the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Employers with significant federal contracts occasionally pursue candidates with O-1 visa or L-1 visas. Some defense-adjacent roles require security clearances, which can complicate sponsorship timelines, so clarifying clearance requirements early in the hiring process matters.
Which cities in Virginia have the most technical lead sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia dominates, particularly Herndon, Reston, McLean, Arlington, and Fairfax. This corridor is home to Amazon Web Services, major defense contractors, and a large concentration of government IT vendors. Richmond has a smaller but growing technology sector, with employers like Capital One and a cluster of fintech firms. Virginia Beach and Charlottesville offer isolated opportunities but at considerably lower volume than Northern Virginia.
How to find technical lead visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to search for technical lead roles in Virginia without sifting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. The platform surfaces roles from established sponsors in the Northern Virginia tech and defense corridor, as well as Richmond-area opportunities. Filtering by role and state on Migrate Mate saves significant time compared to unfiltered job searches.
Are there state-specific considerations for technical leads seeking sponsorship in Virginia?
Virginia's concentration of federal contract work means many technical lead roles carry security clearance requirements, and employers sponsoring clearance-eligible candidates face additional compliance considerations. The Department of Labor's prevailing wage requirements apply statewide, with Northern Virginia wages benchmarked against one of the highest-cost metro areas in the country. Candidates at universities like Virginia Tech and George Mason University also feed a strong local pipeline that technical lead candidates will compete against.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored technical lead jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
