Tips for Finding H-2B Sponsorship Jobs in Washington DC
Target employers tied to federal event calendars
Hotels, catering companies, and event venues in DC ramp up hiring around Congressional sessions, inaugurations, and major national events. Employers who staff these cycles often file H-2B petitions on a predictable annual schedule, making early outreach worthwhile.
Focus on the Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland corridor
H-2B sponsoring employers are concentrated not just in the District itself but in Alexandria, Arlington, Bethesda, and Rockville. Expanding your search across the full metro area significantly increases the number of qualifying positions available to you.
Identify employers with a history of H-2B filings
The Department of Labor's OFLC disclosure data lists every certified H-2B application by employer name and location. Searching DC-area filings shows which specific hotels, landscaping firms, and amusement operators have sponsored workers before and are likely to do so again.
Apply well before peak season deadlines
H-2B requires DOL certification and USCIS approval before your start date. DC employers hiring for spring landscaping or summer tourism typically need to begin the process months in advance, so late applications are rarely considered for that cycle.
Browse H-2B listings on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate's job board filters positions by visa type, so you can browse H-2B sponsorship roles specifically in the Washington DC area without sifting through listings that don't offer work authorization support.
Understand that H-2B is employer-initiated
Unlike some visa categories, H-2B sponsorship starts entirely with the employer filing for a certified labor need. Concentrating your search on DC-area employers who have sponsored before, rather than applying broadly, is a more efficient use of your time.

Which industries in Washington DC sponsor the most H-2B visas?
Hospitality and accommodations lead H-2B visa sponsorship in the DC area, driven by the city's high hotel density and year-round event traffic. Landscaping and grounds maintenance is the second major category, particularly in suburban Virginia and Maryland. Seasonal amusement, recreation, and food service operations also generate consistent H-2B filings across the broader metro region.
Which cities in Washington DC have the most H-2B sponsorship jobs?
H-2B jobs in the DC metro are spread across the District itself and neighboring jurisdictions. Alexandria and Arlington in Virginia are active hubs for hospitality and landscaping employers. Bethesda, Rockville, and Silver Spring in Maryland also have meaningful concentrations of H-2B-filing employers. Searching across the entire metro area, not just the District, gives you the widest range of options.
What types of roles typically qualify for H-2B sponsorship in Washington DC?
H-2B covers temporary non-agricultural positions that are seasonal, peak-load, or one-time in nature. In the DC market, qualifying roles most often include hotel housekeeping, front desk, banquet and catering staff, groundskeeping and landscaping workers, and amusement or recreation attendants. The role must be for a defined temporary period, and the employer must demonstrate that U.S. workers are unavailable to fill it.
How do I find H-2B jobs in Washington DC?
Start by searching Migrate Mate, which lists H-2B sponsorship jobs by location so you can filter directly for Washington DC-area positions. You can also review the Department of Labor's OFLC disclosure database to identify DC-area employers who have previously received H-2B certification, then approach those employers directly. Focusing on hospitality and landscaping sectors will give you the highest concentration of relevant openings.
What is the prevailing wage for H-2B jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
