Which construction companies sponsor H-2B visas in Washington DC?
General contractors and specialty subcontractors working on commercial, hospitality, and federally adjacent projects in DC are the most common H-2B sponsors in construction. Companies handling renovation of office buildings, hotels, and mixed-use developments near the National Mall and downtown corridors have historically filed H-2B labor condition applications with the DOL. Sponsor activity is visible through OFLC disclosure data by employer name and worksite location.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-2B sponsorship?
H-2B construction roles must be temporary, seasonal, or intermittent in nature. In DC, qualifying positions commonly include carpenters, masons, concrete finishers, painters, laborers, and landscaping crew members tied to project-based contracts. Roles must be classified under a specific Standard Occupational Classification code, and the employer must demonstrate that qualified U.S. workers are unavailable for those positions during the defined temporary period.
How do I find construction H-2B sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate lists construction jobs with verified H-2B sponsorship activity in Washington DC, letting you filter by role type and visa category rather than sorting through postings that never mention sponsorship. Because H-2B petitions are filed with USCIS before workers are recruited, confirmed sponsors are identifiable in advance. Searching Migrate Mate for DC construction roles gives you direct access to employers already operating within the H-2B program.
Which areas in Washington DC have the most construction H-2B sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC is a single city-district, so H-2B construction activity concentrates in project-heavy corridors rather than separate cities. The downtown core, Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, and the Southwest Waterfront have seen sustained commercial and mixed-use development driving subcontractor demand. Federal government facilities and embassy-adjacent zones also generate recurring renovation contracts that some employers staff through H-2B petitions during peak construction seasons.
Are there DC-specific considerations for H-2B construction sponsorship?
Washington DC falls under federal wage and labor rules rather than state-level prevailing wage laws, which affects how employers calculate the required wage for H-2B petitions. Employers must obtain a prevailing wage determination through the OFLC Wage Search before submitting an H-2B petition to USCIS. Additionally, many large construction contracts in DC involve federal procurement requirements, which can layer additional compliance obligations on top of standard H-2B program rules.
What is the prevailing wage for H-2B construction jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
