ROLE DESCRIPTION
As a Staff Mechanical Engineer on the Operations Engineering team, you will serve as a primary technical authority for the manufacturing systems and product improvements that enable the manufacturing of our grid-scale storage solutions. You will translate complex failure and line performance data into creative, robust hardware upgrades rooted in deep mechanical principles that improve our overall product design and production. By navigating a multidisciplinary team through technical ambiguity and tight deadlines, you will ensure our manufacturing capability matures alongside our product. Your ability to bridge the gap between design engineering and high-volume production will be instrumental in Form Energy’s mission to deploy batteries that ensure a reliable electric grid.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Architect and implement strategic equipment upgrades that directly improve product performance, reliability, and manufacturing stability.
- Drive the technical resolution of complex mechanical and equipment failures, ensuring success through rigorous project management and adherence to mission-critical deadlines.
- Partner cross-functionally with equipment and product design teams to identify and mitigate hardware risks early in line implementation through rapid prototyping and system-level simulation.
- Own the roadmap for production tooling and automation enhancements, focusing on how equipment design can better serve the long-term reliability and mechanical integrity of the product.
- Scale manufacturing capabilities by developing sophisticated dimensional inspection protocols and integrating advanced processes like laser welding and resin delivery.
- Mentor engineers across the organization in mechanical design best practices, GD&T, and DFM to foster a culture of technical excellence and pragmatic innovation.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
- Significant number of years of related work experience in mechanical design, tooling, or operations engineering, typically 7-10 years.
- Proven track record of mentoring engineering teams under aggressive timelines and implementing methods that ensure on-time project delivery and team alignment.
- Deep expertise in evolving existing designs and equipment to improve product quality.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and complex assembly management with a focus on precision, tolerance stack-up analysis, and manufacturability.
- Extensive experience in pneumatic system design, automation integration, and identifying high-risk mechanisms.
- Applied experience with advanced manufacturing techniques including precision welding, automated assembly, and high-volume production ramp-up.
- Intellectual curiosity and a pragmatic problem-solving mindset when addressing high-stakes mechanical challenges.
- Ability to thrive on complexity and lead through technical ambiguity with a focus on mission-critical grid stability.

Which companies sponsor visas for operations engineers in West Virginia?
Energy and chemical manufacturing companies are the most active sponsors in West Virginia. Dow Chemical's South Charleston facility, Appalachian Power, and natural gas operators in the Marcellus Shale region have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for operations engineering roles. Larger industrial employers with established HR infrastructure are generally more likely to sponsor than smaller regional contractors.
Which visa types are most common for operations engineer roles in West Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for operations engineers in West Virginia, as these roles typically require a bachelor's degree in engineering and qualify as specialty occupations. Canadian and Mexican nationals may also enter under the TN visa in the engineering occupation category. Operations engineers with extraordinary achievement may consider the O-1, though this is far less common.
Which cities in West Virginia have the most operations engineer sponsorship jobs?
Charleston and the Kanawha Valley corridor account for the largest share of operations engineer sponsorship activity in West Virginia, driven by chemical manufacturing and energy infrastructure concentrated there. Morgantown has a smaller but growing presence connected to West Virginia University's engineering programs and affiliated research operations. Huntington also sees periodic hiring tied to industrial and utility employers in the region.
How to find operations engineer visa sponsorship jobs in West Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship eligibility, making it easier to identify operations engineer openings in West Virginia without sorting through roles that won't support international candidates. You can search by role and state to surface positions at energy, chemical, and infrastructure employers across the Kanawha Valley and Morgantown areas that have a track record of sponsoring engineering talent.
Are there state-specific considerations for operations engineers seeking sponsorship in West Virginia?
West Virginia's operations engineering market is heavily tied to energy and chemical industries, so candidates with backgrounds in process engineering, utilities, or industrial plant operations are better positioned for available roles. West Virginia University in Morgantown produces engineering graduates who sometimes transition into sponsored roles with regional employers. Because the state has fewer large multinational employers than coastal markets, sponsorship opportunities are more concentrated among a smaller set of established industrial companies.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored operations engineer jobs in West Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
