Position Summary:

The Department of Pathology, Division of Pediatric at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Wisconsin (CW), seeks a board certified / board eligible Clinical Chemistry, Point-of-Care Testing (POCT), and Biochemical Genetics Laboratory Director (ABCC or ABPath) to join our expanding Division. We are comprised of a nationally and internationally renowned, dedicated group of faculty and staff with a strong commitment to clinical care.

Position Highlights:

• Clinical & Operational Leadership

• Provide medical direction for the clinical chemistry laboratories, including high complexity testing such as:

  • Mass spectrometry
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring
  • Endocrinology and metabolic testing
  • Hemoglobin analysis
  • General chemistry and special chemistry assays
  • Biochemical Genetics
  • Point-of-Care testing
  • Oversee all phases of testing (pre-analytic, analytic, post-analytic).
  • Partner with laboratory leadership, section supervisors, and system stakeholders to ensure efficient and high-quality operations.

• Laboratory Oversight & Administration

• Serve as Clinical Chemistry, POCT and Biochemical Genetics Laboratory Director with oversight across the main laboratory and satellite sites.

• Provide leadership in instrument selection, validation, and implementation of new assays.
• Collaborate on budgeting, capital planning, and strategic growth initiatives.

• Participate on the laboratory executive committee as a member and in institutional committees as a laboratory representative.

• Quality & Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and other regulatory requirements.

• Oversee proficiency testing, quality control, and quality improvement programs.

• Clinical Consultation

• Provide consultation to clinicians regarding:

  • Test selection and utilization
  • Interpretation of complex laboratory results
  • Serve as a resource to clinical teams for diagnostic decision-making.

• Innovation & Test Development

• Lead identification, development, and implementation of new assays and methodologies.

• Evaluate emerging technologies and improve laboratory automation and informatics systems.

• Academic Responsibilities

• Teach laboratory scientists, medical students, residents, and fellows.

• Participate in ComACC-accredited clinical chemistry fellowship program.
• Participate in an ACGME-accredited pediatric pathology fellowship program.
• Opportunities to engage in clinical, translational, or basic science research with dedicated time and resources.

Department/Division Highlights:

The Division of Pediatric Pathology offers services in anatomic pathology, hematopathology, flow cytometry, molecular testing, clinical chemistry, and microbiology. The division has an ACGME-accredited pediatric pathology fellowship program, and AP/CP residents routinely rotate on service. The CW Laboratory performs over 1,050,000 tests at its main lab and three additional satellite laboratories.

Qualifications

• PhD or MD/DO with appropriate training
• Board certification (or eligibility) in Clinical Chemistry (ABCC or ABPath)
• MD/DO candidates must qualify for State medical licensure, or eligibility to obtain license, in the state of Wisconsin.
• Rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful finalist.

Children’s Wisconsin and Children’s Specialty Group

Children’s Wisconsin is an independent health care system dedicated solely to the health and well-being of children. The hospital, with locations in Milwaukee and Northeast Wisconsin, is recognized as one of the leading pediatric health care centers in the United States. Children’s Wisconsin provides primary care, urgent care, emergency care, specialty care, mental and behavioral health services, community health services, foster and adoption services, child advocacy services and health insurance plans. Each year, the Children’s Wisconsin team has more than 6.5 million touchpoints with kids and families through medical care, advocacy, research and education. In Northeast Wisconsin, Children’s Wisconsin is expanding its services to provide increased access to outstanding pediatric subspecialty care. This includes a pediatric hospital, with a Pediatric Unit, Level III NICU and Infusion Center, which is located at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah, WI. A multispecialty pediatric ambulatory clinic with on-site laboratory and radiology services opened in Appleton, Wis. in 2023.

Children’s and its joint venture with the Medical College of Wisconsin – the Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) – are the largest providers of pediatric healthcare in the state, serving the children and families of Wisconsin with the highest level of care through their American College of Surgeons Level I Children’s Surgery Verification Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence, 72-bed Level IV NICU, Level IV Epilepsy Center, and a 72-bed PICU. In 2021-2022, CW and CSG had six specialties ranked by US News & World Report: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; gastroenterology and GI surgery; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; and pulmonology. With over 70 specialties and 675 providers, CSG providers had 220,000 outpatient visits at 13 regional care sites, 67,000 emergency department/trauma center visits, and over 9,000 admissions.
