How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an A&P Mechanic
Emphasize FAA certification requirements
Your A&P license demonstrates specialized knowledge that most workers lack. Frame your role as requiring both technical expertise and federal certification when discussing sponsorship with employers.
Target maintenance repair organizations
MROs like AAR Corp, StandardAero, and Lufthansa Technik regularly sponsor mechanics. These companies understand visa processes better than smaller operators and have ongoing staffing needs.
Highlight avionics experience
Modern aircraft systems require increasingly specialized knowledge. Experience with glass cockpits, FADEC systems, or specific aircraft types strengthens your specialty occupation case significantly for visa applications.
Consider degree alternatives
If you lack a four-year degree, document your aviation training extensively. FAA-approved programs plus three years of progressive experience can substitute for formal education requirements.
Research aircraft-specific roles
Airlines often need mechanics certified on specific aircraft families. Boeing 787, Airbus A350, or business jet experience can make you more attractive to employers considering sponsorship.
Document safety compliance record
Aviation employers value mechanics with clean safety records. Maintain detailed documentation of your compliance history, training certifications, and any safety awards or recognitions you've received.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do A&P mechanics qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, A&P mechanics typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship as a specialty occupation. The role requires specialized knowledge of aircraft systems, federal certification, and often formal aviation training. USCIS generally accepts that maintaining complex aircraft requires specialized skills that distinguish it from general mechanical work.
What degree do I need for visa sponsorship as an A&P mechanic?
While many A&P mechanics have associate degrees in aviation maintenance, a bachelor's degree isn't always required. FAA-approved aviation maintenance programs combined with your A&P certification and work experience can satisfy specialty occupation requirements. Document all formal training extensively to strengthen your case.
Can Canadian A&P mechanics use TN visa status?
Canadian A&P mechanics cannot use TN status directly, as aircraft mechanic isn't listed among approved TN occupations. However, if you have an engineering degree and work in aircraft design or systems analysis roles, you might qualify under the engineer category instead.
Which airlines and companies sponsor A&P mechanics most often?
Major airlines like Delta, United, and American Airlines sponsor mechanics, particularly for specialized aircraft types. MRO companies including AAR Corp, Lufthansa Technik, and StandardAero also frequently sponsor. Business aviation companies like NetJets and Flexjet hire internationally for specialized aircraft maintenance roles.
How does my A&P license transfer for U.S. work authorization?
Your foreign aviation maintenance license doesn't automatically transfer to FAA A&P certification. You'll typically need to pass FAA written and practical exams, though some international experience may count toward eligibility requirements. Plan for this certification process when discussing start dates with potential sponsors.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored A&P Mechanic jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
