How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Technician
Identify whether your technician role qualifies for H-1B or H-2B
The visa path hinges on whether the position normally requires a bachelor's degree. Lab technicians with biology or chemistry degrees, biomedical equipment technicians, and field service engineers for semiconductor or medical equipment often qualify for H-1B. Trade-level technician roles in HVAC, automotive, or general maintenance typically fall under H-2B for temporary positions.
Target semiconductor and medical device field service roles
Companies like Applied Materials, Lam Research, ASML, Siemens Healthineers, and GE HealthCare hire field service engineers and technicians to install and maintain complex equipment. These roles often require engineering degrees and involve travel to customer sites across the U.S. The specialized equipment knowledge required makes a strong H-1B specialty occupation argument.
Earn U.S.-specific technical certifications early
Whichever technician field you target, obtain the relevant U.S. certification before applying. EPA 608 for HVAC, ASE for automotive, CompTIA A+ and Network+ for IT, ASCP for clinical lab work - these credentials tell employers you are ready to work within U.S. regulatory and industry standards. Many certifications are available through online proctored exams that you can take internationally.
Look for lab technician roles at cap-exempt research institutions
Universities, teaching hospitals, and nonprofit research institutes hire laboratory technicians and research technicians, and they are H-1B cap-exempt employers. A lab technician role at a university's biology, chemistry, or engineering department avoids the annual H-1B lottery. Search university job boards and academic research lab websites for openings.
Highlight specialized equipment training and manufacturer certifications
Manufacturer-specific certifications from Siemens, Honeywell, Carrier, Trane, or specific instrument brands differentiate you from generalist technicians. Employers filing visa petitions need to show the role requires specialized expertise, and manufacturer training documentation supports this claim. Keep records of all equipment-specific training courses and certifications you complete.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can technicians get H-1B visa sponsorship in the U.S.?
It depends on the type of technician role and the education required. Technician positions that require a bachelor's degree - such as biomedical equipment technicians, laboratory technicians with science degrees, or telecommunications engineers - may qualify for H-1B. Roles that require only a certificate or associate's degree may face difficulty meeting the specialty occupation standard but could qualify for H-2B visas.
What types of technician jobs are most likely to be sponsored?
Laboratory technicians in pharmaceutical and biotech companies, field service engineers for complex equipment (semiconductor tools, medical devices), and IT technicians at large enterprises have the strongest sponsorship track records. The common factor is that these roles require specialized technical knowledge tied to a specific degree or extensive formal training. Employers in STEM-heavy industries are generally more experienced with visa sponsorship.
Are there visa options for HVAC or automotive technicians?
HVAC and automotive technician roles typically use the H-2B visa for seasonal or temporary positions, as they usually do not require a bachelor's degree. Some HVAC companies in regions with extreme seasonal demand (hot summers, cold winters) file H-2B petitions for technicians. The EB-3 skilled worker green card category may also apply to experienced HVAC and automotive technicians with two or more years of training.
Do technicians need U.S.-specific certifications?
Most technician roles require U.S.-recognized certifications. HVAC technicians need EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling. Automotive technicians benefit from ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications. Lab technicians may need ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification. Obtaining these credentials before or shortly after arriving demonstrates readiness to U.S. employers.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Technician jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a technician in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
