ROLE SUMMARY
The NVH Quality Technician (RIV3) supports pre-production and production NVH quality at the Normal plant by executing standardized NVH audits, troubleshooting BSR/NVH issues, and partnering with engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing to drive build-in-quality for every vehicle. This role operates with limited day-to-day supervision and applies established skills across a wide range of moderately complex tasks in the assembly environment, consistent with Rivian’s RIV3 technician expectations.
Responsibilities
- Execute the standard NVH manufacturing audit for production vehicles, including:
- Static tests: Air leak, door closing BSR, Thermal systems NVH
- Dynamic BSR: Interior BSR on 4-post shaker and BSR track
-
High-speed tests: Powertrain, road noise, wind noise
-
Set up, operate, and troubleshoot SCADAS XS data acquisition hardware, microphones, GPS, accelerometers, CAN connections, analog g-force gauge, and EzSpeed equipment according to the NVH audit standard.
-
Use Simcenter Testlab to run defined project templates, verify channel health, record measurements, and ensure traceable, high-quality NVH data for each vehicle audited.
-
Maintain and update NVH audit trackers, test completion status, subjective ratings, and key findings.
-
Document issues and repairs in Rivian systems (Optic/EOL, Jira NVHM tickets, shared trackers) with clear problem statements, suspected root cause, containment actions, and repair notes.
-
Support root-cause investigations for BSR and NVH concerns.
-
Perform targeted measurement following written procedures, accurately recording measurements and NVH symptoms, and iterating test plans with engineers.
-
Collaborate daily with NVH engineers, Pre-Production Quality, Manufacturing, and Zone/repair teams to prioritize vehicles, align on test plans, and implement effective short-term containment and long-term countermeasures.
-
Provide clear, objective subjective evaluations (e.g., 1–10 ratings, “pass/fail with comments”) and ensure they are consistently captured in audit sheets and reports.
-
Work safely in high-speed track, 4-post, and shop environments; follow all Rivian safety procedures and NVH test standards for instrumentation, driving, and containment.
-
Perform standard technician/mechanic tasks as needed to support NVH work, including drive unit or other major component replacement, interior and exterior trim/panel removal and reinstallation, part replacement, and creating access for instrumentation installation, while using appropriate hand and power tools safely and correctly.
As a RIV3 technician, operate with minimal daily instruction, demonstrate strong ownership of assigned work, and provide informal guidance to early-career technicians on NVH test execution and documentation.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
-
RIV3 technician level (or equivalent) within Rivian’s technician leveling framework, with demonstrated mastery of RIV2 skills and the ability to work independently on moderately complex assignments.
-
2–4 years of relevant experience in automotive, manufacturing, or test and development, ideally in NVH, BSR, durability, or quality roles.
-
Core automotive technician skills, including safe vehicle lifting, drive unit or other major component removal and replacement, interior and exterior trim/panel removal and installation, basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, and confident use of common hand and power tools (e.g., torque wrenches, impact tools, panel tools).
-
Hands-on experience with:
- Vehicle testing or diagnostics in a shop, track, or lab environment
-
Basic measurement tools (e.g., microphones, accelerometers, gauges, feeler gauges) and following written test procedures
-
Ability to interpret test results at a technician level (identify abnormal noises, correlate with road inputs, and distinguish hardware vs. software/systems concerns) and communicate findings in clear written and verbal form.
-
Proficiency with spreadsheets and digital tools for tracking work (Google Sheets, Confluence/Jira or similar ticketing/knowledge systems).
-
Strong problem-solving mindset and comfort working in a fast-paced launch/manufacturing environment with evolving test plans and priorities.
-
Willingness to work on-site at the Normal plant with potential early starts, track time, and occasional overtime as production and launch needs require.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Prior experience in NVH or BSR diagnostics, vehicle quality audits, or durability testing.
-
Familiarity with Simcenter Testlab, SCADAS, and/or similar NVH data acquisition and analysis tools.
-
Experience supporting cross-functional investigations (e.g., working closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality to close out RCs and drive corrective actions).
-
Demonstrated alignment with Rivian Compass values and a strong focus on build-in-quality and customer experience.

Which companies sponsor visas for technicians in Illinois?
Abbott Laboratories, Caterpillar, Motorola Solutions, Boeing, and Baxter International are among the larger Illinois employers with documented H-1B and other work visa sponsorship histories for technical roles. Chicago-area manufacturing and healthcare companies file the most Labor Condition Applications for technician positions, though mid-size firms in Peoria, Rockford, and the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor also sponsor regularly.
Which visa types are most common for technician roles in Illinois?
H-1B is the most common visa category for technician roles that require a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field, such as electronics, biomedical equipment, or industrial engineering technology. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying technician categories. O-1 visas apply to technicians with demonstrated extraordinary ability, though this is far less common for standard technician positions.
Which cities in Illinois have the most technician sponsorship jobs?
Chicago and its suburbs, including Schaumburg, Downers Grove, and Lake County, account for the largest share of technician sponsorship jobs in Illinois. Peoria has significant demand driven by Caterpillar's manufacturing operations. Rockford, with its aerospace and machining industry concentration, and the Research Triangle around Urbana-Champaign, near the University of Illinois, also generate consistent technician sponsorship activity.
How to find technician visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is specifically built for international job seekers looking for visa-sponsored roles, and you can filter directly by Illinois and the technician category to see current openings from employers willing to sponsor. Because not every technician job listing explicitly states sponsorship availability, using a platform like Migrate Mate that pre-screens for sponsoring employers saves significant time compared to general job searching.
Are there state-specific considerations for technician visa sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois technician roles subject to H-1B sponsorship must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the specific occupation and geographic area, with Chicago metro wages typically set higher than downstate Illinois. The University of Illinois system and research institutions like Argonne National Laboratory provide a pipeline of technically trained candidates and also sponsor visas directly, making academic and government-adjacent research roles worth considering alongside private-sector opportunities.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored technician jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
