Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Certified Public Accountant
Emphasize CPA licensure in visa applications
CPA certification demonstrates specialized accounting knowledge beyond a bachelor's degree. Include your license number, issuing state, and exam scores in petition materials to strengthen your specialty occupation case.
Target Big Four and mid-tier accounting firms
Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG, and regional firms like BDO regularly sponsor H-1B visas. They understand visa processes and have dedicated immigration teams to handle petitions efficiently.
Leverage tax season timing for applications
File H-1B petitions during busy season when firms need additional staff most. Demonstrate how your skills address specific client needs during peak periods from January through April.
Highlight specialized accounting areas
Focus on niche expertise like forensic accounting, international tax, or SEC reporting. Specialized skills in areas like SOX compliance or IFRS make stronger cases for specialty occupation requirements.
Consider state CPA reciprocity rules
Research which states accept your foreign accounting credentials through reciprocity agreements. Some states require additional coursework or experience before granting CPA licensure to international candidates.
Document continuing education requirements
CPAs must complete ongoing professional education to maintain licensure. Include your CPE transcript and professional development plans in visa applications to show commitment to the profession.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a CPA license before applying for visa sponsorship?
No, you can get sponsored without a CPA license, but having one strengthens your case significantly. Most employers prefer candidates who are CPA-eligible or actively pursuing licensure. You can obtain your CPA after starting work in the U.S., though some firms may require it within a specific timeframe.
What degree do I need for CPA visa sponsorship?
You need a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or closely related field. Most states require 150 credit hours for CPA licensure, which typically means additional coursework beyond a bachelor's degree. International degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency through credential evaluation services like WES or ECE.
Which visa types work best for CPAs?
H-1B visa is most common for CPAs at accounting firms and corporations. E-3 visa works for Australians, while TN visa covers Canadian and Mexican CPAs under NAFTA. L-1 visas apply when transferring from international offices of the same accounting firm to U.S. locations.
Do small accounting firms sponsor visas for CPAs?
Yes, but less frequently than large firms. Small firms often lack dedicated immigration resources and may be concerned about costs. Focus on firms that serve international clients or have previous H-1B filing experience. Local CPA societies can help identify sponsor-friendly firms in your area.
How to find Certified Public Accountant jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Certified Public Accountant jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on H-1B and EB-2/EB-3 visa opportunities with Big Four accounting firms, multinational corporations, public companies requiring SOX compliance, and growing mid-sized firms. These employers commonly sponsor CPAs for tax, audit, and financial reporting positions.
Can I get sponsored for bookkeeping or accounting clerk roles?
Unlikely. Bookkeeping and general accounting clerk positions typically don't qualify as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree. Focus on roles specifically requiring CPA credentials or advanced accounting knowledge like staff accountant, senior accountant, or tax specialist positions that clearly require specialized education.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Certified Public Accountant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
