How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Finance Assistant
Target employers with a sponsorship track record
Large banks, asset managers, and Fortune 500 finance departments sponsor Finance Assistants far more consistently than small firms. Focus your applications on employers with documented H-1B or E-3 filing history rather than assuming any employer will sponsor.
Align your degree field with the job description
Visa sponsorship for this role depends on your degree matching the position. A finance, accounting, economics, or business administration degree strengthens your specialty occupation case. Unrelated degrees create complications even if your work experience is strong.
Highlight technical finance skills in your application
Sponsoring employers look for specialized skills that justify the cost and paperwork. Proficiency in Excel modeling, ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, or financial reporting frameworks makes your application stronger and your specialty occupation argument clearer.
Ask about sponsorship early, but frame it correctly
Raise the sponsorship question after demonstrating your value, not in your opening message. Phrase it as confirming their process: 'I'd need H-1B sponsorship to work in the U.S. Is that something your team has supported before?' keeps the conversation constructive.
Prepare for prevailing wage requirements
Your employer must certify your offer meets the Department of Labor's prevailing wage for your role and location. Research the wage level for Finance Assistants in your target city so you can evaluate whether an offer genuinely qualifies for sponsorship.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can a Finance Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Finance Assistant positions can qualify as specialty occupations when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as finance, accounting, or economics. The job description must demonstrate that a degree in a related discipline is a standard requirement for the position, not just a preference. Generic administrative finance roles where any degree field is accepted are more likely to face scrutiny from USCIS.
Do I need a finance degree specifically, or will any bachelor's degree work?
Your degree needs to relate directly to the Finance Assistant role for the specialty occupation standard to hold. Degrees in finance, accounting, economics, mathematics, or business administration are the strongest fits. A degree in an unrelated field creates a weaker case unless the employer can demonstrate the role genuinely requires knowledge specific to that field. Work experience alone does not substitute for a relevant degree under H-1B rules.
How do I find Finance Assistant jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles open to candidates who need visa sponsorship, so you're not wasting applications on employers who won't consider international hires. Larger corporate employers in banking, insurance, and financial services are the most reliable sponsors for Finance Assistant positions. Searching by company size and industry helps narrow to employers with an established sponsorship process.
Are Australian citizens in a better position to get sponsored for Finance Assistant roles?
Yes, significantly. Australian citizens qualify for the E-3 visa, which requires no lottery entry and has an annual cap of 10,500 that has never been reached. That means an Australian candidate with a qualifying Finance Assistant job offer can apply directly at a U.S. consulate without competing in the H-1B lottery. Other nationalities must enter the H-1B lottery, which selects roughly one in four registrations.
What happens if my H-1B petition is denied for a Finance Assistant role?
A denial doesn't automatically end your options. Your employer can refile with stronger supporting documentation, such as a more detailed specialty occupation analysis or expert opinion letters. If you're currently on F-1 OPT, you may have time to address the denial before your work authorization expires. Some candidates also explore whether their role qualifies under a different visa category, though Finance Assistant positions rarely fit O-1 or TN criteria.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Finance Assistant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
