Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a State And Local Tax Manager
Target Big Four and national accounting firms first
Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG sponsor H-1B and L-1 visas for SALT Managers regularly and have established immigration infrastructure. Their volume of LCA filings makes them the most reliable sponsorship path for this role.
Confirm your degree field matches the specialty occupation standard
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to be in accounting, taxation, finance, or a closely related field. A general business degree may require additional documentation to establish specialty occupation status for this position.
Highlight multistate compliance experience in your application
Employers sponsoring SALT Managers want demonstrable experience across multiple state tax regimes. Nexus analysis, apportionment, and state audit defense work strengthens both your candidacy and the employer's specialty occupation argument to USCIS.
CPA licensure improves your sponsorship case significantly
A CPA designation reinforces the specialty occupation argument because USCIS views professional licensure as evidence a role requires specialized academic knowledge. Some employers make CPA licensure a firm requirement before initiating H-1B sponsorship.
Ask about L-1A sponsorship if you have intracompany history
Multinational firms with overseas offices can sponsor experienced SALT Managers via the L-1A intracompany transferee visa. This bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely and is worth exploring if you worked for a related entity abroad.
Understand that LCA prevailing wage tier affects approval risk
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for your location and experience level. SALT Manager roles typically fall at wage levels III or IV, which USCIS views favorably as evidence of a genuinely specialized position.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do State and Local Tax Manager roles commonly receive H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. SALT Manager is a well-established specialty occupation with consistent H-1B visa approval history. Big Four firms, regional CPA firms, and large corporate tax departments file LCAs for this title regularly. The role's requirement for a degree in accounting or taxation and its specialized nature make it a strong candidate for H-1B classification. You can browse sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate.
What degree does USCIS expect for a State and Local Tax Manager H-1B petition?
USCIS expects a bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, taxation, finance, or a directly related field. A degree in a closely adjacent discipline may qualify if supported by transcripts showing relevant coursework. General business degrees without a clear accounting concentration are more likely to trigger a Request for Evidence, so your employer's immigration counsel should assess your credentials before filing.
How does the H-1B lottery affect SALT Manager candidates?
SALT Manager petitions are subject to the standard H-1B cap and lottery, meaning selection is not guaranteed even for strong candidates. The regular cap is 65,000 visas annually, with an additional 20,000 reserved for U.S. master's degree holders. Candidates with a U.S. master's in accounting or taxation get two chances in the lottery draw, which meaningfully improves selection odds.
Can a State and Local Tax Manager transfer employers mid-H-1B?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer once they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval, provided you're maintaining valid status. The new employer must file their own H-1B petition and LCA. SALT Manager roles transfer cleanly because the specialty occupation classification is well-established and new petitions for this title face low RFE rates at experienced firms.
What practical steps should I take to find SALT Manager roles with visa sponsorship?
Focus your search on employers with documented H-1B or L-1 visa filing history for tax roles. Big Four and national accounting firms are the most consistent sponsors. Corporate in-house tax departments at large multinationals also sponsor regularly but less visibly. Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa-sponsoring employers, which removes the guesswork of identifying which companies will actually support your immigration process.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored State And Local Tax Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
