Environmental Technician Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Environmental technicians can secure H-1B, TN, and E-3 visa sponsorship, though the degree requirement creates barriers. While environmental science, chemistry, and engineering degrees typically qualify, many entry-level technician roles don't meet the specialty occupation standard that requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. For detailed occupation requirements, see the O*NET profile.

STRATEGY
Republic Services’ strategy is designed to generate profitable growth. Through acquisitions and industry advancements, we safely and sustainably manage our customers’ multiple waste streams through a North American footprint of vertically integrated assets. We focus on three areas of growth to meet the increasing needs of our customers: recycling and waste, environmental solutions and sustainability innovation. With our integrated approach, strengthening our position in one area advances other areas of our business. For example, as we grow volume in recycling and waste, we collect additional material to bolster our circularity capabilities. And as we expand environmental solutions, we drive additional opportunities to provide these services to our existing recycling and waste customers.
Recycling and Waste
We continue to expand our recycling and waste business footprint throughout North America through organic growth and targeted acquisitions. The 13 million customers we serve and our more than 5 million pick-ups per day provide us with a distinct advantage. We aggregate materials at scale, unlocking new opportunities for advanced recycling. In addition, we are cross-selling new products and services to better meet our customers’ specific needs.
Environmental Solutions
Our comprehensive environmental solutions capabilities help customers safely manage their most technical waste streams. We are expanding both our capabilities and our geographic footprint. We see strong growth opportunities for our offerings, including PFAS remediation, an increasing customer need.
SUSTAINABILITY INNOVATION
Republic’s recent innovations to advance circularity and decarbonization demonstrate our unique ability to leverage sustainability as a platform for growth. The Republic Services Polymer Center is the nation’s first integrated plastics recycling facility. This innovative site processes rigid plastics from our recycling centers, producing recycled materials that promote true bottle-to-bottle circularity. We also formed Blue Polymers, a joint venture with Ravago, to develop facilities that will further process plastic material from our Polymer Centers to help meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging. We are building a network of Polymer Centers and Blue Polymer facilities across North America. We continue to advance decarbonization at our landfills. As demand for renewable energy continues to grow, we have 70 landfill gas-to-energy projects in operation and plan to expand our portfolio to 115 projects by 2028.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Environmental Technician
Target roles requiring specialized degrees
Focus on positions specifically requiring environmental science, chemistry, or engineering degrees rather than general technician roles that accept any bachelor's degree.
Emphasize analytical and regulatory work
Highlight experience with environmental compliance, data analysis, and regulatory reporting rather than basic sample collection or equipment maintenance tasks.
Consider environmental consulting firms
Consulting companies often need degree-specific expertise for client projects and regulatory compliance, making them more likely to sponsor visas.
Leverage specialized certifications
Professional certifications in hazmat, water quality, or air monitoring can strengthen your case for roles requiring specific technical knowledge.
Research government contractor opportunities
Federal contractors working on environmental remediation or compliance projects often need credentialed professionals and sponsor work visas regularly.
Apply for scientist-level positions
Environmental scientist roles have stronger visa approval odds than technician positions since they clearly require degree-level knowledge and analytical skills.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do environmental technician roles qualify for H-1B visas?
Basic technician roles often don't qualify because they don't require degree-level knowledge in a specific field. However, positions involving environmental compliance analysis, regulatory reporting, or specialized testing that specifically require environmental science or chemistry degrees can qualify. The job description must demonstrate why a bachelor's degree is essential.
What degree do I need for environmental technician visa sponsorship?
Environmental science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or biology degrees work best. The degree field must directly relate to the job duties. General science degrees may work if combined with relevant experience, but employers typically prefer candidates whose degree specifically matches environmental work requirements.
Which employers sponsor environmental technician visas most often?
Environmental consulting firms, government contractors, and large manufacturing companies with environmental compliance departments sponsor most frequently. These employers need credentialed professionals for regulatory work and client projects. Laboratories conducting environmental testing also sponsor, particularly for analytical chemistry positions requiring specialized knowledge.
Can I get TN visa sponsorship as an environmental technician?
TN visas are available for Canadians and Mexicans in specific professions. Environmental technicians aren't a designated TN category, but you might qualify under 'Chemist' or 'Engineer' if your degree and duties match. The role must require professional-level work, not routine technical tasks.
What's the approval rate for environmental technician H-1B petitions?
USCIS doesn't publish occupation-specific approval rates, but environmental roles face scrutiny over specialty occupation requirements. Positions emphasizing analytical work, regulatory compliance, and degree-specific knowledge have better approval odds than general technician roles. Having a directly relevant degree significantly improves chances.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Environmental Technician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
