Emphasize research impact in your application
Faculty positions often qualify for EB-2 National Interest Waiver based on research contributions. Highlight publications, citations, and how your work benefits U.S. academic or economic interests.
Consider cap-exempt H-1B advantages
Universities and affiliated research institutions qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers. You can start working immediately after approval without waiting for October 1st or entering the lottery.
Prepare for specialty occupation documentation
H-1B requires proving the faculty position needs specialized knowledge. Your advanced degree must relate to your teaching field, and the job description should specify degree requirements.
Explore O-1 for distinguished academics
Faculty with exceptional achievements may qualify for O-1 visas. This includes internationally recognized awards, significant publications, peer review activities, or membership in prestigious academic organizations.
Understand tenure track implications
Tenure-track positions can support dual intent arguments for green card applications. The permanent nature of tenure demonstrates long-term commitment to U.S. academic institutions.

Find Faculty Position JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do faculty positions commonly sponsor visas?
Yes, universities regularly sponsor visas for faculty, especially research universities. They typically sponsor H-1B (cap-exempt), O-1 for distinguished academics, and EB-2 NIW for professors with significant research contributions. Community colleges sponsor less frequently due to limited resources.
What degree do I need for H-1B faculty sponsorship?
You need at least a master's degree in the field you'll be teaching, though most universities prefer a Ph.D. The degree must directly relate to your faculty position. For example, teaching computer science requires a degree in computer science or closely related field.
Can adjunct faculty get visa sponsorship?
Visa sponsorship for adjunct positions is rare. Most universities only sponsor full-time faculty due to the cost and complexity. Part-time or temporary teaching roles typically don't meet H-1B requirements or justify sponsorship investment from employers.
How long does faculty visa sponsorship take?
H-1B processing for cap-exempt faculty takes 3-6 months without premium processing, or 15 days with premium processing. O-1 applications typically take 2-4 months. EB-2 NIW can take 12-24 months depending on country of birth and current priority dates.
How to find Faculty Position jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Faculty Position jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international academics with sponsoring institutions. Universities and research institutions commonly offer H-1B, O-1, and J-1 visa sponsorship for faculty roles. Focus your search on research universities, community colleges, and academic medical centers, as these employers frequently sponsor visas for qualified international professors and researchers.
Do I need publications for faculty visa sponsorship?
Publications aren't required for H-1B sponsorship but strengthen your case. For O-1 visas, significant publications are often necessary to demonstrate extraordinary ability. EB-2 NIW applications heavily rely on publications and citations to prove national interest.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Faculty Position jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
