Head Of Product Design Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Head of Product Design roles attract strong H-1B visa sponsorship from tech companies, but competition is fierce. Employers typically require a portfolio demonstrating systems-level design leadership, and your degree field matters more than most candidates expect at the visa petition stage. For detailed occupation requirements, see the O*NET profile.

Head of Product Design/ Director
About the Role: You will define and own the physical product experience for a breakthrough stealth-stage neurotechnology and brain-computer interface (BCI) startup building an AI-powered neural interface platform. This role will shape how the wearable looks, feels, and integrates naturally into everyday life. The first-generation product is a highly integrated, sensor-rich textile beanie that combines cameras, microphones, open-ear speakers, EEG sensors, flexible electronics, and battery systems into a soft, elegant form factor designed to be worn comfortably for extended periods of time.
Role Overview:
- Own ID and ME for the wearable end-to-end: sketch through CAD, prototype, tooling, and DfM with overseas CMs.
- Lead the integration of electronics into soft goods: flex PCB packaging, rigid-island placement, textile-to-rigid transitions, weight distribution, thermal management, serviceability.
- Define and enforce comfort engineering: pressure mapping, weight balance, skin-contact thermal limits, breathability, fit across head sizes and hair types, long-wear validation.
- Drive the design language and material story for our brand's physical products: fabrics, seams, transitions, how the device announces itself or fades into the background.
- Partner with the EE lead on rigid-island layout, antenna keep-outs, and electrode contact pressure; with audio and camera leads on acoustic ports, mic mesh, lens windows, and pod integration.
- Partner with the reliability lead on drop, ingress, thermal, and ergonomic robustness.
- Ship the product by end of year and build and lead the product design function as ID and ME capability scales.
Responsibilities:
- 10+ years of industrial design and/or mechanical engineering, with multiple shipped consumer wearables or comparable body-worn products.
- Demonstrated experience integrating electronics into soft goods or textile products (apparel, headwear, garments, or wearables with significant fabric content).
- Deep CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, or equivalent) and rendering (Keyshot or comparable).
- Strong instinct for comfort engineering: pressure points, weight, thermal, fit across diverse users, backed by structured wear testing and iteration.
- Experience driving DfM, tooling, and quality with overseas CMs.
Preferred Skills:
- High-density biocompatible interfaces, dry electrode arrays, or other dense sensor-to-skin integrations.
- Soft goods sourcing and textile engineering: knit beanies, technical apparel, woven goods.
- Optical windows, acoustic ports, or sensor windows in consumer products.
- Biocompatibility, skin contact, and dermatological testing for body-worn products.
- A point of view about what makes a wearable beautiful rather than gadget-y.

Lead with your design systems portfolio
USCIS evaluates H-1B specialty occupation based on the role's degree requirements. A portfolio showing systems-level design work, not just UI output, signals the theoretical depth that distinguishes a qualifying Head of Product Design petition from a generic creative hire.
Confirm your degree field aligns with the role
A bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Graphic Design, or a closely related field strengthens your petition. General business or communications degrees can create RFE risk at this level, even when you have years of relevant leadership experience behind you.
Target companies with established design organizations
Companies with dedicated design teams, think mid-stage startups through enterprise, are far more likely to have H-1B infrastructure in place. A Head of Product Design hire at a company without prior sponsorship history means longer lead times and more attorney work.
Understand the LCA wage level for your seniority
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application before your H-1B petition. At the Head level, USCIS and DOL expect a Wage Level III or IV classification. Confirm with your employer that the offered role is benchmarked correctly before filing begins.
Document cross-functional leadership clearly
Petitions for design leadership roles benefit from evidence showing you direct product strategy, not just visual execution. Offer letters, org charts, and project briefs that demonstrate you own design decisions across engineering and product teams strengthen the specialty occupation argument.
Ask about cap-exempt sponsorship pathways
Universities, research nonprofits, and some government-affiliated organizations are exempt from the H-1B lottery cap. A Head of Product Design role at a cap-exempt employer means no lottery risk and year-round filing, worth exploring if you missed the annual registration window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Head of Product Design qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS requires that the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. For Head of Product Design, degrees in Human-Computer Interaction, Product Design, or Graphic Design typically support the specialty occupation standard. Roles where the employer accepts any degree field regardless of discipline create RFE risk, so job description language matters significantly at petition stage.
What visa types are most common for Head of Product Design roles?
H-1B visa is the most common path. Australians can pursue the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and a much faster timeline. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify under TN visa status with the right degree. O-1A is an option for design leaders with significant industry recognition, awards, publications, or a track record of leading teams at well-known companies can support the extraordinary ability standard.
How strong are H-1B approval rates for product design leadership roles?
Approval rates for senior design roles have historically been solid when petitions are well-documented. The main risk factor is specialty occupation challenges when the job description is broad or the degree field doesn't closely match design. Employers with experienced immigration counsel and clear role documentation see far fewer RFEs than those filing with generic job descriptions that could apply to any creative hire.
Does work experience substitute for a design degree in sponsorship petitions?
It can, but it's complicated. USCIS accepts three years of specialized experience as equivalent to one year of education, meaning 12 years of relevant work experience can substitute for a four-year degree. However, for a Head of Product Design role, demonstrating that the position itself normally requires a degree in a specific design-related field is more important than the candidate's own educational background when establishing specialty occupation.
Where can I find Head of Product Design jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking U.S. roles with visa sponsorship. The platform filters for employers who have sponsored visas before, so you're not wasting time applying to companies that will reject you at the offer stage over immigration status. Browse Head of Product Design listings on Migrate Mate to find roles matched to your visa situation.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Head Of Product Design jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
