How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Janitor
Target specialized facility management roles
Focus on positions like facility maintenance supervisor or environmental services manager that require technical expertise rather than general cleaning duties to improve sponsorship eligibility.
Emphasize relevant certifications
Highlight certifications in hazardous materials handling, industrial cleaning systems, or facility management software to demonstrate specialized skills beyond basic janitorial work.
Consider TN visa if you're Canadian/Mexican
The TN visa category includes 'Scientific Technician' which may apply to specialized cleaning roles in laboratories, hospitals, or research facilities requiring technical knowledge.
Look at H-2B seasonal opportunities
Some employers use H-2B visas for temporary janitorial work in seasonal businesses like resorts, but these positions are temporary and location-specific with strict limitations.
Build toward supervisory positions
Gain experience in team leadership, budget management, or facility operations to qualify for management roles that have better visa sponsorship prospects than entry-level positions.
Research state licensing requirements
Some states require licenses for certain cleaning specialties like carpet cleaning or pest control, which can help demonstrate the skilled nature of your work.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do janitor jobs qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Generally no. Janitor positions are classified as unskilled labor and don't meet the H-1B requirement for specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree. However, facility management or environmental services management roles with technical requirements may qualify if they require specific education and expertise.
Can I get sponsored as a janitor without a college degree?
Most traditional janitorial roles don't qualify for degree-requiring visas like H-1B. Your best options are H-2B temporary worker visas for seasonal positions, or targeting specialized roles like hazmat technician or facility maintenance supervisor that value certifications over degrees.
What certifications help with visa sponsorship for cleaning jobs?
OSHA safety certifications, hazardous materials handling credentials, ISSA cleaning industry certifications, and facility management software training can help demonstrate specialized skills. Hospital or laboratory cleaning certifications are particularly valuable for technical environments requiring expertise beyond general cleaning.
Are there seasonal visa options for janitor positions?
Yes, the H-2B visa covers temporary seasonal work including janitorial services at resorts, event venues, or seasonal businesses. These positions are limited to specific timeframes, require employer demonstration of seasonal need, and don't lead to permanent status.
How can I transition from janitor to a sponsorable position?
Focus on gaining supervisory experience, learning facility management software, obtaining safety certifications, or specializing in technical cleaning (hospitals, labs, industrial). Building toward roles like facility manager, environmental services supervisor, or safety coordinator creates better sponsorship opportunities.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Janitor jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
