Target companies with established H-1B filing histories
Large tech platforms, enterprise software companies, and fintech firms file H-1B petitions for Platform PMs consistently. Prioritizing employers with a track record of sponsorship significantly reduces the risk of an offer falling through at the petition stage.
Align your degree to the technical nature of the role
USCIS evaluates whether your degree directly relates to the position. A computer science, software engineering, or information systems background strengthens the specialty occupation argument for Platform PM roles far more than a general business degree.
Understand the H-1B lottery timeline before accepting offers
Cap-subject H-1B registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. Accepting a Platform PM offer in April without lottery selection creates a six-month gap. Clarify your employer's timeline expectations and cap-exempt options before signing.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer terms
Premium processing reduces USCIS adjudication to 15 business days. For Platform PM roles with hard product launch deadlines, asking your employer to include premium processing protects your ability to start on time and demonstrates planning awareness.
Document cross-functional technical leadership for your petition
Platform PM roles require coordinating engineering, infrastructure, and API teams. Strong petition support letters that document your technical decision-making authority help USCIS adjudicators distinguish this role from generalist PM positions less likely to qualify.
Explore cap-exempt employers if you missed the H-1B lottery
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities are exempt from the H-1B cap. Some run internal platform teams that hire PMs. These employers can file petitions year-round without lottery risk, making them worth pursuing actively.

Does a Platform Product Manager role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Platform Product Manager typically qualifies as a specialty occupation under H-1B standards because the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as computer science, engineering, or information systems. USCIS looks for evidence that the degree is a normal, common, or universal requirement for the position, platform-focused PM roles with engineering coordination responsibilities generally satisfy this because generalist backgrounds are insufficient for the technical scope involved.
What degree do I need for a Platform PM role to support an H-1B petition?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a closely related technical field provides the strongest foundation. Degrees in business or general management are harder to tie to the specialty occupation standard unless supported by a concentration in technology or significant coursework in systems design. If your degree is from a three-year program outside the U.S., an equivalency evaluation from a credential assessment organization can establish it as equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for Platform Product Managers compared to software engineers?
Platform PM roles face the same H-1B lottery odds as any cap-subject petition, with selection rates around 25% in recent years. However, Platform PMs are less commonly sponsored than software engineers, meaning fewer competing petitions from this title specifically. The greater risk for PMs is petition denial on specialty occupation grounds rather than lottery odds. Employers with strong legal teams who document the technical requirements of the role clearly tend to see higher approval rates.
Can I find Platform Product Manager jobs that offer visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate?
Yes. Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles offering visa sponsorship, so you can browse Platform PM positions without sorting through employers who won't sponsor. This is particularly useful for H-1B and E-3 applicants who need to identify sponsorship-willing employers early in the job search rather than discovering the limitation after multiple interview rounds.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off from a Platform PM role?
You enter a 60-day grace period from the date your employment ends, during which you can look for a new employer willing to file an H-1B transfer petition. If a new employer files before the grace period expires, you can continue working once the petition is received. Platform PMs with strong portfolios and technical depth tend to move quickly in the job market, but starting your search immediately rather than waiting is important given the hard 60-day cutoff.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Platform Product Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
