Target aerospace and medical device manufacturers
Companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Medtronic, and Johnson & Johnson regularly sponsor precision machinists for complex manufacturing roles requiring specialized skills and security clearances.
Emphasize your CNC programming and CAD expertise
Highlight experience with advanced CNC systems, CAD/CAM software, and precision measurement tools. These technical skills demonstrate the specialized knowledge required for H-1B eligibility.
Consider roles requiring quality control certification
Positions involving ISO certification, Six Sigma, or FDA-regulated manufacturing often require bachelor's degrees in engineering or related fields, strengthening your visa case.
Look for senior or lead machinist positions
Lead roles involving training, process optimization, or cross-functional collaboration are more likely to meet specialty occupation requirements than entry-level production work.
Leverage defense contractor opportunities
Defense contractors often need precision machinists for classified projects. These roles typically require degrees and offer strong sponsorship potential due to specialized security requirements.
Document your technical training and certifications
Compile certificates from manufacturers like Haas, Mazak, or FANUC, plus any metrology or quality control training. This evidence supports your specialized knowledge claims.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do precision machinists need a college degree for H-1B sponsorship?
Not always. While many positions prefer engineering or manufacturing technology degrees, the three-for-one rule allows three years of specialized experience to substitute for one year of education. Twelve years of precision machining experience can potentially replace a bachelor's degree if the role requires specialized knowledge of advanced manufacturing processes.
Which visa types work best for precision machinists?
H-1B visa is most common for specialty occupation roles requiring technical expertise. TN visa works for Canadian and Mexican citizens in engineering-related positions. O-1 visa may apply for machinists with extraordinary ability in advanced manufacturing. EB-3 skilled worker category is an option for permanent residence through employer sponsorship.
What makes a precision machinist role qualify as a specialty occupation?
The position must require specialized knowledge beyond basic machining. Examples include programming complex CNC systems, working with exotic materials in aerospace applications, maintaining tolerances under 0.0001 inches, or developing manufacturing processes for medical devices. Generic production machining typically doesn't qualify.
How to find Precision Machinist jobs with visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to find Precision Machinist positions with visa sponsorship. Focus your search on manufacturing companies, aerospace firms, and automotive manufacturers that commonly sponsor skilled workers. Look for roles offering H-1B, EB-2, or EB-3 visas. These employers value precision machining expertise and frequently sponsor international talent to fill critical manufacturing positions.
How do approval rates differ for precision machinist H-1B petitions?
Approval rates vary by employer and role complexity. Defense contractors and aerospace manufacturers typically see higher approval rates due to clear specialty occupation requirements. Positions requiring engineering oversight or advanced technical skills perform better than general manufacturing roles during USCIS review.
Can precision machinists from Australia use the E-3 visa?
Yes, if the role meets specialty occupation requirements. Australian precision machinists with relevant technical degrees or extensive experience in advanced manufacturing can qualify for E-3 visas. The position must require specialized knowledge, such as aerospace machining or medical device manufacturing, beyond routine production work.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Precision Machinist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
