Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Roadway Engineer
Target infrastructure and consulting firms
Large engineering consultancies like AECOM, Jacobs, and WSP sponsor frequently. State departments of transportation and major contractors building highways, bridges, and transit systems also provide strong sponsorship opportunities for roadway engineers.
Emphasize specialized transportation knowledge
Highlight expertise in traffic engineering software, pavement design, geometric design, or intelligent transportation systems. Specialized skills in VISSIM, Synchro, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or MicroStation strengthen your H-1B specialty occupation case significantly.
Consider Professional Engineer licensing pathway
Many employers value engineers working toward PE licensure. Mention your EIT certification or plans to pursue PE licensure. This demonstrates long-term commitment and specialized professional development that supports visa applications.
Research federal and state project opportunities
Government contractors working on federal highway projects often have consistent visa sponsorship needs. Look for firms with active FHWA contracts or major state infrastructure projects requiring specialized transportation engineering expertise.
Network through professional engineering societies
Join ITE, ASCE transportation division, or TRB committees. Many sponsors recruit through professional networks. Conference connections and committee involvement demonstrate serious commitment to transportation engineering as a specialized field.
Prepare detailed project portfolio
Document specific roadway projects, design software proficiency, and traffic analysis experience. Quantify your contributions to highway design, intersection improvements, or transit projects. Concrete examples support specialty occupation requirements effectively.

Find Roadway Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a roadway engineer?
You need a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or a closely related field. Some employers accept degrees in mechanical or environmental engineering if you have relevant transportation coursework or experience. Australian three-year engineering degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year programs.
Do roadway engineers get approved for H-1B visas frequently?
Yes, roadway engineering roles typically receive strong approval rates because they clearly require specialized engineering knowledge. USCIS recognizes transportation engineering as a specialty occupation requiring specific technical skills in traffic flow, pavement design, geometric design, and transportation planning that generic engineering roles lack.
Can roadway engineers qualify for E-3 or TN visas?
Australian citizens can use E-3 visas, while Canadian and Mexican citizens qualify for TN status under the Engineer category. Both require a bachelor's degree in engineering and a job offer requiring specialized engineering knowledge. TN requires the role to be temporary, while E-3 allows indefinite renewals.
Which companies sponsor roadway engineers most often?
Major engineering consultancies like AECOM, Jacobs, WSP, and HDR sponsor frequently. State departments of transportation, infrastructure contractors like Bechtel or Fluor, and firms specializing in transportation projects also provide sponsorship opportunities. Government contractors working on federal highway projects are particularly reliable sponsors.
What if my degree says 'civil engineering' but not 'transportation'?
A civil engineering degree typically qualifies if your coursework included transportation-related classes like traffic engineering, transportation planning, or pavement design. Highlight relevant coursework, transportation projects, and specialized software experience. Most civil engineering programs include sufficient transportation content to support specialty occupation requirements.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Roadway Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
How to find Roadway Engineer jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Roadway Engineer jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on infrastructure companies, government transportation departments, and engineering consultancies that commonly sponsor H-1B and EB-2 visas for civil engineers. These employers often need specialized expertise in highway design, traffic management, and transportation planning that qualified international candidates provide.
