How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Bridge Engineer
Target infrastructure-focused employers
Major engineering firms like AECOM, Jacobs, and WSP regularly sponsor bridge engineers. State departments of transportation also sponsor frequently for critical infrastructure projects requiring specialized expertise.
Emphasize structural analysis expertise
Highlight experience with bridge design software like SAP2000, STAAD, or CSiBridge. Specialized knowledge in seismic design, load rating, or inspection strengthens your specialty occupation case significantly.
Document your engineering credentials
Professional Engineering license or progress toward licensure strengthens visa applications. International engineers should have credentials evaluated through NCEES or similar recognized evaluation services for equivalency.
Consider federal contracting roles
Bridge projects for federal agencies often require security clearances, which can complicate visa sponsorship. Focus on private sector or state-level positions for smoother sponsorship processes initially.
Prepare for prevailing wage requirements
Bridge engineer LCA filings typically qualify for higher wage levels due to specialized requirements. Employers must pay prevailing wages, which vary significantly by location and experience level.
Leverage transportation specializations
Experience with specific bridge types like cable-stayed, suspension, or movable bridges demonstrates extraordinary ability for O-1 applications. Document major projects and publications in your portfolio.

What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a bridge engineer?
You need a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field. Some employers accept transportation or construction engineering degrees if coursework included structural analysis and bridge design. Three years of relevant work experience can substitute for one year of missing education.
Do bridge engineers qualify for O-1 visas?
Yes, if you demonstrate extraordinary ability through major bridge projects, industry recognition, published research, or leadership roles in significant infrastructure developments. Document awards, peer recognition, and projects of national or regional importance to strengthen your case.
Which employers commonly sponsor bridge engineers?
Large engineering consultancies like AECOM, Jacobs, WSP, and HDR regularly sponsor. State departments of transportation, transit authorities, and specialized bridge engineering firms also sponsor frequently. Federal positions may require citizenship, limiting options for visa holders initially.
How does PE licensure affect visa sponsorship?
Professional Engineering licensure strengthens your specialty occupation case but isn't required for initial sponsorship. However, career advancement often requires PE licensure. International engineers should start the NCEES evaluation process early, as state licensing requirements vary significantly.
Can bridge engineers get green cards through employment?
Yes, through EB-2 or EB-3 categories. Advanced degree holders or those with exceptional ability qualify for EB-2, which has shorter wait times for most countries. The PERM labor certification process typically takes 18-24 months before filing the I-140 petition.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Bridge Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
