How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Automation Engineer
Differentiate between industrial and software automation paths
Automation engineer roles span industrial controls (PLC, HMI, robotics integration) and software test automation (CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code). The sponsoring companies, required skills, and salary bands differ significantly between these paths, so clarify which direction you are pursuing early.
Target companies scaling manufacturing operations
Tesla, Amazon (fulfillment automation), and pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Moderna have sponsored automation engineers. Any company building or expanding production facilities needs engineers who can design, program, and commission automated systems.
Gain experience with industrial robot programming
Hands-on experience programming FANUC, ABB, KUKA, or Universal Robots arms is a differentiator for industrial automation roles. Combining robot programming with vision system integration (Cognex, Keyence) creates a skill set that is in high demand and supports the case for specialized sponsorship.
Leverage STEM OPT for cross-functional project exposure
Engineering degrees qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Use the 36-month OPT window to work on projects that span mechanical, electrical, and software systems - this cross-functional automation experience is exactly what employers want and is hard to develop outside of real production environments.
Consider DevOps automation roles at tech companies
If your automation focus is software-oriented, companies like Google, Meta, and Netflix sponsor for roles involving CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation (Terraform, Ansible), and test automation frameworks. These positions are classified under software engineering SOC codes and have strong sponsorship histories.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an automation engineer and a controls engineer for visa purposes?
For visa classification, both typically fall under engineering SOC codes, but the focus differs. Controls engineers primarily work with PLCs and SCADA systems for process control, while automation engineers often have a broader scope that includes robotic system integration, vision systems, and production line automation. Some software automation roles may be classified under software developer SOC codes, which affects prevailing wage requirements.
Do automation engineers need a specific degree for H-1B sponsorship?
A bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, industrial, or computer engineering is most common. Software-focused automation roles may accept computer science degrees. The key requirement is that your degree is directly related to the job duties described in the H-1B petition.
Which industries offer the most automation engineer visa sponsorship opportunities?
Automotive manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, e-commerce fulfillment, and semiconductor fabrication currently have the strongest demand for automation engineers. The expansion of U.S. manufacturing capacity, including EV battery plants and chip fabs, has created significant new demand. Tech companies also sponsor for software automation and DevOps roles.
Can automation engineers work at startup companies on an H-1B?
Yes, startups can sponsor H-1B visas if they can demonstrate the ability to pay the required prevailing wage. Robotics startups and industrial automation companies backed by venture funding often sponsor engineers. However, startups may have less experience navigating the immigration process, so the timeline can be less predictable compared to large employers with in-house immigration counsel.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Automation Engineer jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a automation engineer in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
