Search Automation Jobs in IllinoisAutomation Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies sponsor visas for automation roles in Illinois?
Large manufacturers and technology firms with significant Illinois operations are among the most active sponsors for automation roles. Caterpillar in Peoria, Abbott in North Chicago, and Midway Labs, along with major automation integrators and industrial OEMs headquartered or operating in the Chicago metro area, have historically filed H-1B visa petitions for controls engineers, robotics specialists, and process automation professionals. Consulting and systems integration firms with Illinois offices also sponsor regularly for these roles.
Which visa types are most common for automation roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for automation engineers and related roles in Illinois, as positions like controls engineer, robotics engineer, and automation systems engineer typically require a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering, meeting the specialty occupation standard. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering categories. Candidates with exceptional credentials may also pursue O-1A classification, though this requires demonstrated extraordinary achievement.
Which cities in Illinois have the most automation sponsorship jobs?
Chicago and its northern suburbs, including Deerfield, Waukegan, and Gurnee, concentrate the highest volume of automation sponsorship opportunities due to the density of manufacturing headquarters, life sciences companies, and industrial technology firms. Peoria is significant given Caterpillar's global operations there. Rockford has an established aerospace and precision manufacturing base that drives demand for automation professionals, and the broader I-88 technology corridor west of Chicago also hosts engineering employers that sponsor visas.
How to find automation visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, making it easier to filter automation roles in Illinois without sorting through postings from employers unwilling to sponsor. You can search by role type and state to surface controls engineers, robotics specialists, and industrial automation positions from companies that have a documented sponsorship history. Migrate Mate's focus on verified sponsorship employers saves significant time compared to general job searching.
Are there any Illinois-specific factors that affect automation visa sponsorship?
Illinois's strong engineering school pipeline, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Illinois Institute of Technology, means employers are accustomed to sponsoring OPT and STEM OPT candidates before transitioning them to H-1B status. The state's dense concentration of manufacturing and industrial automation employers also means prevailing wage determinations for automation roles are well-established in DOL data, which can streamline the Labor Condition Application process. Illinois has no state-level visa or licensing requirements specific to automation engineers beyond federal immigration requirements.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored automation jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
