The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.
THE ROLE
Block's Total Rewards team is responsible for designing and delivering the global compensation programs that help us attract, retain, and recognize the people who build our products. As our Compensation Automation & Tooling Specialist, you'll serve as the technical lead for the team — owning the systems, automated workflows, and self-service tools that power our compensation operations for approximately 6,000 employees worldwide. This is a high-impact, highly visible role where you'll drive our shift from manual administration to a scalable, technology-enabled model, and directly shape how the team works for years to come.
YOU WILL
-
Design and deploy end-to-end automation for high-volume compensation processes, including benchmarking data ingestion, market pricing analytics, offer approvals, off-cycle adjustments, and personalized compensation statement generation.
-
Serve as primary technical administrator for specialized compensation management software and define integration requirements with the enterprise HRIS team.
-
Partner with the Compensation Partners and Compensation Programs Design lead to configure and stress-test core systems ahead of the Annual Compensation Cycle.
-
Build and maintain self-service tools for HRBPs, Talent Acquisition, and business leaders — examples include internal mobility calculators, global transfer modeling tools, and automated statement generators.
-
Design and maintain Total Rewards dashboards providing real-time visibility into compensation metrics, budget utilization, and market trends.
-
Lead development and ongoing training of internal AI agents to handle and route foundational compensation inquiries and escalate to the appropriate reviewers on the team.
-
Manage the Total Rewards knowledge base, ensuring global policies and technical guidelines are accurate and optimized for AI ingestion and end-user use.
-
Establish and enforce data privacy and governance protocols for all AI applications used by the Total Rewards team, ensuring sensitive data (PII, salary, equity) is handled in strict alignment with InfoSec, Legal, and AI usage policies.
-
Champion modern technical collaboration practices — including version control via GitHub — and upskill non-technical team members in adopting these tools.
YOU HAVE
-
6+ years of experience in HRIS, Compensation Operations, People Analytics, or HR Technology.
-
Expertise with Workday integrations and other HCM platforms.
-
Experience with workflow automation platforms and the ability to build and maintain end-to-end data pipelines.
-
Proficiency with technical collaboration and version control tools (e.g., GitHub), and a track record of guiding non-technical teams through adoption.
-
Strong data modeling and visualization skills; experience building executive-facing dashboards.
-
Solid foundation in global compensation principles — market pricing, equity mechanics, annual review cycles — and the ability to translate compensation strategy into technical requirements.
-
Experience partnering with InfoSec, Legal, or Compliance teams to vet and govern AI tools and automated workflows handling sensitive data.
TECHNOLOGIES WE USE AND TEACH
-

Search Automation Jobs in CaliforniaAutomation Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies sponsor visas for automation roles in California?
Large technology and manufacturing employers in California with consistent records of sponsoring automation professionals include Tesla, Apple, Amazon Robotics, Siemens, Intuitive Surgical, and Lam Research. Aerospace and defense contractors such as Northrop Grumman and Raytheon also hire automation engineers and have sponsored H-1B and other work visas. Sponsorship history is publicly searchable through Department of Labor LCA disclosure data.
What visa types are most common for automation jobs in California?
The H-1B is the most widely used visa for automation roles in California, particularly for positions in robotics, controls engineering, and process automation that require at minimum a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or software engineering. The O-1A is an alternative for candidates with demonstrated exceptional ability. Australians may qualify for the E-3, which has no annual lottery and a dedicated allocation separate from the H-1B cap.
Which cities in California have the most automation sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, Fremont, and Santa Clara, concentrates the highest volume of automation sponsorship jobs due to semiconductor manufacturing, robotics, and advanced manufacturing companies headquartered there. Los Angeles is a significant secondary market, particularly for aerospace and defense automation. San Diego also has an active cluster driven by life sciences automation and defense electronics companies.
How to find automation visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S. The platform filters California automation jobs by employers with active sponsorship histories, saving considerable research time compared to manually checking LCA disclosures. Automation roles in California span robotics, industrial controls, process engineering, and test automation, so using Migrate Mate's role-specific filters helps narrow results to positions that match your engineering background.
Are there state-specific considerations for automation roles and visa sponsorship in California?
California's prevailing wage requirements under Department of Labor rules apply to all H-1B and E-3 positions, and wage levels in the Bay Area and Los Angeles metro areas are among the highest in the country for automation engineers. California also has one of the largest concentrations of research universities, including UC Berkeley, Stanford, and Caltech, which feed engineering talent pipelines and influence where automation employers cluster and sponsor international hires.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored automation jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
