The North Regional Division (NRD) provides project development, technical design, and design oversight for projects in District Four (4) and District Five (5). Working alongside New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) General Office and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) personnel, the NRD advances NMDOT projects through both internal design efforts and consultant oversight. The North Region Division also provides oversight on local agency projects that use federal funding for design and construction activities. The NRD is based out of the Santa Fe NMDOT General Office and is comprised of professional engineers, technicians, and administrative support staff.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
This position assists in the preparation of design drawings and calculations for highway construction projects using computer drafting software applications, as well as other tasks assigned by the Project Development Engineer and/or team lead.
How does it get done?
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Interpret and layout design information provided by a design engineer and/or squad lead in order to effectively produce viable construction plan sets.
- Use AutoCAD Civil 3D software as well as other programs (i.e., Excel, Word, etc.) to assist in the development of a design project and construction plan set.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver’s License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public.
