The Materials Testing Laboratory provides technical support regarding the design, use, application, evaluation and research associated with construction materials.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
Under close supervision, performs nondestructive roadway data collection statewide to be used in pavement condition assessments and safety evaluations.
This position will collect, analyze, and file data into databases.
Assists in traffic control setup and take down, provide assistance to field crews when needed.
How does it get done?
- Perform all applicable test procedures efficiently and accurately in accordance with AASHTO and TTCP test methods within established turnaround time.
- Accurately and efficiently prepare sample documentation and test results for supervisor review.
- Prepare sample material, test cards and relevant documentation and route to appropriate Laboratory Units in a timely and acceptable turnaround time after receiving and final results are completed.
- Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor in a timely, responsible and professional manner.

High School Diploma or equivalent.

- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
- Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
- Employment requires successful completion of pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
- Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. May include exposure to: sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, and hazardous chemicals. High speed/high volume traffic and loud noises, confined spaces; falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call outs for emergencies. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments. Interaction with the public by phone and in person. Frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
