Tips for Your Accountant Internship Search
Apply in the fall for the following summer
Large employers, public accounting firms and corporate finance teams, open summer intern applications as early as August and September. Waiting until spring means the structured cohort programs are already closed. Smaller companies and co-ops post closer to start dates, so check listings across the full year rather than targeting one window.
Build a project portfolio before you apply
Accountant intern recruiters expect limited work history, so give them something concrete to assess. Complete two or three documented projects, a financial model built in Excel, a cost analysis walkthrough, or a reconciliation exercise, and keep them accessible. Note the tools used and the decision or answer each project produced.
Work campus resources and direct applications together
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and recruiters there often move faster for candidates they meet in person. Your professors and career center staff frequently know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach.
Practice the accountant intern interview format out loud
Accountant intern screens typically involve technical questions on debits and credits, financial statement relationships, and sometimes a short case analyzing a business scenario. Practice answering out loud and walking through your reasoning step by step, interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as the final answer.
Target structured rotational and cohort programs early
Large accounting employers run formal intern programs designed to train candidates new to the field, Big Four firms, corporate controllers' groups, and internal audit departments all recruit in organized cohorts. These programs open early and fill fast. Identify the ones aligned with your coursework concentration and submit in the first application wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 9% of the accountant internships listed here. Decide what you can actually commit to, on-site, hybrid, or remote, before you start searching, then filter by location and work type so you are reviewing only roles you can take. Filtering first saves time and keeps your focus on applications worth completing.
Accountant Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an accountant internship?
Lead with coursework and completed projects rather than work history, hiring teams at the intern level expect limited professional experience. The concrete artifact that gives accountant recruiters something to assess is a portfolio of financial models, reconciliation exercises, or case analyses with clear methodology and outputs. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for candidates they meet face to face.
Can an accountant internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for accountant interns is consistent performance on real deliverables, demonstrated attention to detail, and team headcount at the time offers go out. The practical approach: treat every project as if you are being evaluated, because you are, without building your post-graduation plan around an outcome that isn't promised.
When should I apply for accountant internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers, public accounting firms and major corporations, recruit for summer cohorts the preceding fall, often closing applications before winter. Smaller companies, regional firms, and co-op programs post closer to their actual start dates, so openings appear year-round. Check listings regularly rather than waiting for a single recruiting season.
Are accountant internships paid?
Most professional accountant internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, large public accounting firms and corporate finance teams generally pay more than small regional employers or nonprofit organizations. Where an employer discloses pay, the listing will show it, so you can compare across opportunities before applying.
What should an accountant internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that show your process: the accounting software or tools used, the problem you addressed, and a link to the output, a financial model, audit workpaper sample, or published analysis. Add relevant coursework such as financial accounting, cost accounting, or auditing. Keep the entire document to one page.
Are there remote accountant internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 91% of the accountant internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill quickly because they attract candidates from across the country, so apply early once you spot a role that fits. Use the work-type filter to see only remote or hybrid listings without sorting through roles you cannot take.
What is a Big Four accounting internship?
Big Four internships at Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG are among the most structured entry points into public accounting, designed specifically for candidates new to professional audit, tax, or advisory work. They recruit heavily on campus starting in the fall for the following summer, move fast, and are competitive, identify the service line that fits your coursework and apply in the first recruiting wave.
Can international students get accountant internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
