Tips for Your Investment Analyst Internship Search
Apply months before the summer start date
Large investment banks and asset managers open summer intern recruiting the preceding fall, with many programs closing by November. If you wait until spring, the structured cohorts are already full. Set a reminder to check openings in September and apply to your target programs in the first wave.
Build a portfolio before you apply
At the intern level, hiring teams expect limited professional history, so your projects carry the weight. Document two or three financial models, stock pitches, or valuation analyses with the tools you used, whether that's Excel, Python, or Bloomberg, and make them accessible so recruiters can assess your actual work.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and finance professors or career center staff often know which firms recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to smaller regional firms and boutiques running their own cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach.
Practice your technical screen out loud before your first interview
Investment analyst intern screens typically include a financial modeling test, accounting or valuation questions, and a market or stock pitch. Practice explaining your reasoning aloud, not just arriving at the right answer, since interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as the conclusion you reach.
Target structured summer analyst programs early
Major banks, asset managers, and financial services firms run formal summer analyst programs built to train candidates new to the field. These programs recruit early, fill in the first application wave, and often convert strong performers to full-time roles. Identify the programs that match your target function and apply before the fall deadline.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 80% of the investment analyst internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before you begin searching, then filter by location and work type so you're not sorting through roles you cannot take or relocate for.
Investment Analyst Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an investment analyst internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. A portfolio with documented financial models, stock pitch decks, or valuation case studies gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for candidates they meet in person.
Can an investment analyst internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it is performance on real deal or research work, whether the team has headcount opening at the time you'd return, and how early you signal interest. Position for it by treating every project seriously without counting on the offer.
When should I apply for investment analyst internships?
Earlier than most expect. Large asset managers, investment banks, and financial firms recruit summer interns the preceding fall, with some programs closing by October or November. Smaller companies, regional firms, and co-op programs post closer to their start dates, so openings appear year-round and it pays to check regularly.
Are investment analyst internships paid?
Most professional investment analyst internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry segment, and location, and listings show it where the employer chooses to disclose it. Boutique and smaller firms may offer stipends rather than hourly wages, so read each listing carefully.
What should an investment analyst internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three documented financial models, equity research write-ups, or valuation analyses, naming the tools used and where to see the work, whether that's a linked spreadsheet, a published pitch deck, or a case competition submission. Add relevant coursework and keep it to one page.
Are there remote investment analyst internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 20% of the investment analyst internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they attract a national applicant pool, so apply early and filter by work type to see them before spots close.
What is a summer analyst program for investment analyst roles?
Summer analyst programs are structured, cohort-based internships run by investment banks, asset managers, and financial firms specifically to train people new to the field. They run for eight to ten weeks, include formal training and deal or research exposure, and recruit heavily from universities the fall before the summer start date. They are competitive and fill in the first application wave.
Can international students get investment analyst internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
