Tips for Your Finance And Accounting Internship Search
Apply to summer roles in the fall
Large employers in investment banking, public accounting firms, and corporate finance open summer intern applications as early as August or September. If you wait until spring, the structured cohort programs at those employers are already closed. Set a reminder at the start of the academic year and treat fall as the primary application season for competitive programs.
Build a project portfolio before you apply
Recruiters hiring finance and accounting interns expect limited work history, so your coursework and independent projects carry the most weight. Document two or three completed analyses, financial models, or case study write-ups, name the tools you used, and make the work accessible, whether through a shared drive, a GitHub repository, or a PDF you can attach or link.
Work campus resources and direct applications together
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and recruiters at those events often move faster for students they meet in person. Professors who advise on accounting and finance topics frequently know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Apply directly to smaller companies running their own cohorts alongside campus activity to widen the pool you reach.
Practice your technical screen out loud
Finance and accounting intern interviews commonly include a case-style question, a modeling exercise, or a walk-through of a financial statement. Practice answering these prompts out loud rather than just working through them silently, because interviewers weigh how you structure and explain your reasoning as much as the final answer. Rehearse with a classmate or career advisor before your first real screen.
Target structured rotational and cohort programs early
Large employers in financial services, insurance, and corporate finance run formal internship programs designed to train candidates who are new to professional finance. These rotational and analyst-track programs recruit on fixed timelines that often begin months before the internship starts. Identify the programs that match your interests and apply in the first wave, since slots fill before the general posting cycle opens.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 33% of the finance and accounting internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before you start reviewing postings, then filter by location and work type so you spend time only on roles you can actually take. Sorting this out at the start prevents you from progressing in a process you'll need to withdraw from later.
Finance And Accounting Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a finance and accounting internship?
Lead with coursework and completed projects rather than work history, since recruiters expect limited experience at the intern level. For finance and accounting candidates, the concrete artifact that gives hiring teams something to assess is a documented analysis, a financial model, or a case study showing your tools and method. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a finance and accounting internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What drives it most for finance and accounting interns is sustained performance on real deliverables, available headcount on the team, and how early you signal interest in returning. Position for a return offer by treating every assignment as visible work product without counting on the outcome.
When should I apply for finance and accounting internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers in banking, public accounting, and corporate finance recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as August or September of junior year. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings consistently rather than in one seasonal push ensures you don't miss the early windows that fill before spring.
Are finance and accounting internships paid?
Most professional finance and accounting internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show the rate where the employer chooses to disclose it. Unpaid internships do exist, primarily at small nonprofits, so read each posting carefully before applying.
What should a finance and accounting internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that name the tools you used and link to the work where possible, such as a financial model built in Excel, a valuation analysis, or a case competition submission. Add relevant coursework in accounting, finance, or economics. Keep the entire resume to one page.
Are there remote finance and accounting internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 67% of the finance and accounting internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill quickly because they attract applicants from across the country, so apply early once you've decided what format works for your situation, and use the work-type filter to see only the listings that match.
What is a rotational finance internship?
A rotational finance internship moves you through two or more business units, such as financial planning and analysis, treasury, and corporate accounting, over a single summer or semester. These structured programs are common at large corporations and are designed for candidates new to the field. They recruit early, slots are limited, and competition is high, so identify the programs that fit and apply in the first wave of recruiting.
Can international students get finance and accounting internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
