Tips for Your Financial Analyst Internship Search
Apply to large employers in the fall
Investment banks, asset managers, and corporate finance teams at large companies open summer internship applications the preceding fall, often by October. If you wait until spring, the structured programs are already closed. Set a calendar reminder for early fall and treat the first application wave as your primary window.
Build a financial model portfolio before you apply
Hiring teams for financial analyst internships want something concrete to evaluate. Build and document two or three projects, a discounted cash flow analysis, a comparable company model, or a budget variance dashboard, using Excel, Python, or SQL, and link them from your resume. Projects replace the work history you do not have yet.
Work campus connections alongside direct applications
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied directly to your university, and recruiters there often move faster than online applicants. Professors and career center staff frequently know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller, non-campus cohorts alongside those efforts widens the pool you can reach.
Practice the financial analyst intern screen out loud
Financial analyst intern interviews typically include a technical or case component: financial statement analysis, a modeling walk-through, or a valuation question. Practice answering out loud and explaining your reasoning step by step, since interviewers weigh how you think as much as whether you reach the right number. One or two practice sessions with a peer changes how you perform.
Target rotational and structured finance programs early
Large companies run rotational finance internship programs designed to train people new to the field, placing interns in corporate finance, FP&A, treasury, and investor relations in a single summer. These programs recruit early, are competitive, and close in the first application wave, identify the ones that fit your background and apply before the general pool opens.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 40% of the financial analyst internships listed here. Decide what you can actually commit to before you start applying, whether that is on-site, hybrid, or remote, then filter by location and work type so you are not sorting through roles you cannot take.
Financial Analyst Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a financial analyst internship?
Lead with coursework, personal projects, and a portfolio rather than work history, hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. For financial analyst candidates, the concrete artifact recruiters assess is a documented financial model, valuation analysis, or data dashboard showing your tools and methodology. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a financial analyst internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for financial analyst interns is consistent performance on real deliverables, available headcount on the team, and how early the employer communicates return-offer decisions. Position yourself by doing the work well and expressing interest in the team, but keep pursuing other options in parallel.
When should I apply for financial analyst internships?
Earlier than most expect. Large employers, investment banks, asset managers, and Fortune 500 finance teams, recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as August or September. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. If you are targeting a structured program at a large firm, applying in the first wave matters.
Are financial analyst internships paid?
Most professional financial analyst internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, corporate finance roles at large firms tend to pay more than nonprofit or government placements. Where employers disclose pay, it appears directly on the listing, so you can compare before you apply.
What should a financial analyst internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects, a discounted cash flow model, a sector equity analysis, or a budgeting dashboard, naming the tools used (Excel, Python, SQL, Tableau) and where to see the work, such as a linked portfolio or GitHub repository. Add relevant coursework in valuation, accounting, or statistics, and keep it to one page.
Are there remote financial analyst internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 60% of the financial analyst internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they attract applicants from every location, so apply early and filter by work type to see them before they close.
What is a rotational finance internship program?
Rotational finance internship programs place interns across two or more business units, such as corporate finance, treasury, financial planning and analysis, and investor relations, over a single summer. They are designed for people new to the field and offer broader exposure than a single-team placement. These programs recruit early, are competitive, and fill in the first application wave.
Can international students get financial analyst internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
