Tips for Your Financial Analyst Intern Internship Search
Apply before recruiting windows close
Large banks, asset managers, and Fortune 500 finance teams open summer internship applications the preceding fall, often closing before winter break. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates. Check listings as soon as the new academic year begins and submit applications the week a role opens rather than near the deadline.
Build a project portfolio recruiters can open
Financial analyst intern recruiters expect limited work history and look for demonstrated skill instead. Document two or three projects, such as a discounted cash flow model, a comparable company analysis, or a budget variance report, with your inputs, outputs, and methodology visible in a linked spreadsheet or repository. Named tools and real outputs give screeners something concrete to assess.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured internship programs tied to your university, and your professors and career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Apply directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside that campus activity so you're reaching openings that never appear at fairs.
Practice your technical screen out loud before you apply
Financial analyst intern interviews typically include a technical or case component, such as walking through a valuation, interpreting a financial statement, or building a simple model under time pressure. Practice explaining your reasoning aloud, not just producing the answer, because interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as your final output.
Target structured rotational and university programs early
Many large financial institutions and corporations run dedicated rotational or university finance internship programs built to train candidates new to the field. These programs recruit on fixed timelines that often start in the fall, fill their cohorts quickly, and are competitive. Identify the programs that recruit from your school or degree type and apply in their first recruiting wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 50% of the financial analyst intern internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before sorting through listings, then filter by location and work type so you spend your time on roles you can actually take. On Migrate Mate, the work-type filter is on the search page and updates with live listings.
Financial Analyst Intern Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a financial analyst intern internship?
Lead with coursework and personal projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. Build a portfolio that includes documented financial models, valuation exercises, or data analyses with your methodology visible, giving recruiters something concrete to assess. Apply directly to companies and attend campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a financial analyst intern internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for financial analyst intern candidates is the quality of your project work, whether the team has open headcount, and how early the employer runs its return-offer process. Perform well on real deliverables and express interest early, but line up other options so you're not counting on one outcome.
When should I apply for financial analyst intern internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers, including banks, asset managers, and corporate finance teams, recruit summer interns the preceding fall, with some programs closing before winter break. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to their start dates, so openings appear year-round. Check listings regularly and apply as soon as a role opens rather than waiting until the deadline.
Are financial analyst intern internships paid?
Most professional financial analyst intern internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show it where the employer discloses it. Internships at large financial institutions and Fortune 500 corporate finance teams tend to offer the most competitive packages, while smaller firms and nonprofits vary more widely.
What should a financial analyst intern internship resume include?
Lead with two or three complete, documented projects rather than work history: name the tools you used, the problem you analyzed, and where the work is visible, such as a linked spreadsheet model, published analysis, or GitHub repository with valuation or forecasting files. Add relevant coursework in accounting, corporate finance, or statistics, and keep the resume to one page.
Are there remote financial analyst intern internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 50% of the financial analyst intern internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they attract applicants from across the country, so apply early once you find a role that fits. Filter by work type to see only the format you can commit to before sorting through the full list.
What is a rotational finance internship program?
Rotational finance internship programs place interns across two or more business units, such as financial planning and analysis, treasury, and corporate accounting, over a single summer or semester. They're designed for people new to the field and are common at large corporations and financial institutions. These programs recruit early, fill quickly, and are competitive, so identify which ones target your school and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get financial analyst intern internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
