Accounting Intern Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accounting intern in South Dakota?
Most accounting intern roles in South Dakota require active enrollment in a bachelor's degree program in accounting, finance, or a closely related field at an institution like the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, or Augustana University. Employers look for candidates who have completed foundational coursework in financial accounting and taxation. South Dakota does not require an intern-level license, but pursuing CPA exam eligibility from the South Dakota Board of Accountancy strengthens your candidacy significantly.
Which companies hire accounting interns in South Dakota?
Employers hiring accounting interns in South Dakota right now include BPM, Anytime Fitness, and Community Counseling Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's mix of large healthcare systems, regional banks, and state government offices means intern openings appear across a wider range of industries than many comparably sized states.
Which South Dakota cities have the most accounting intern jobs?
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Huron lead South Dakota for accounting intern openings. Sioux Falls dominates because it is home to major financial services headquarters, regional healthcare systems, and corporate back-office operations, while Rapid City draws openings through its tourism-linked businesses and Black Hills-area employers, and Pierre generates demand through state government agencies and regulatory bodies that require consistent accounting support.
Are there remote accounting intern jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, though they are less common than in fully desk-based roles. About 25% of accounting intern openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the fact that many intern tasks involve on-site document handling, system access, and in-person mentorship. The portions of the role most likely to be performed remotely include data entry, financial analysis, and report preparation.
How can I get hired as a accounting intern in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through campus recruiting programs at South Dakota State University, the University of South Dakota, or Augustana University, where local employers like Sanford Health and regional CPA firms actively recruit students with no prior work history. Volunteer tax preparation through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, available at South Dakota sites each spring, builds concrete hands-on experience that employers recognize. Strong grades in accounting coursework and progress toward CPA exam eligibility through the South Dakota Board of Accountancy give candidates a clear edge.
