Instructor Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a instructor in South Dakota?
The path depends on the setting. For K-12 positions, the South Dakota Department of Education issues teaching certificates through its Office of Educator Effectiveness, and you will need a regionally accredited bachelor's degree along with a completed state-approved educator preparation program. For postsecondary and technical college roles, a relevant degree and professional experience typically satisfy requirements without a state teaching certificate. Corporate and workforce training positions generally prioritize subject-matter expertise and a portfolio of past instructional work.
Which companies hire instructors in South Dakota?
South Dakota instructor roles are posted by Western Dakota Technical College, Interstates Companies, and Lake Area Technical College and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The University of South Dakota system, South Dakota State University, and the South Dakota Board of Technical Education's six technical colleges are among the most consistent sources of instructor openings across the state.
Which South Dakota cities have the most instructor jobs?
Rapid City, Watertown, and Sioux Falls see the highest concentration of instructor openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls leads because it is the state's largest city with a strong healthcare, financial services, and workforce training sector, while Rapid City draws demand from Black Hills State University and regional technical programs, and Brookings benefits from South Dakota State University anchoring a dense cluster of academic and research-focused roles.
Are there remote instructor jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and more than many fields, particularly for curriculum developers, online course facilitators, and corporate trainers whose work does not require a physical classroom. About 0% of instructor openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting growth in online program delivery across the state's universities and technical colleges. Roles tied to hands-on labs, clinical supervision, or in-person skills assessment remain almost entirely on-site.
How can I get hired as a instructor in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a graduate teaching assistantship or adjunct assignment at one of South Dakota's public universities, where institutions like South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota regularly place advanced-degree students in entry-level teaching roles. Technical colleges within the South Dakota Board of Technical Education system also hire recent industry professionals for part-time instruction in trades and healthcare without requiring prior classroom experience. Holding a subject-area certification, completing a South Dakota educator preparation program, or building a portfolio of training materials from a prior role in nursing, IT, or skilled trades can give candidates a clear edge over other applicants.
