Faculty Position Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a faculty position in South Dakota?
Becoming a faculty member in South Dakota typically requires earning a terminal degree in your field, such as a PhD, EdD, or MFA, though some community college and professional program roles accept a master's degree with significant industry experience. South Dakota does not require a separate state teaching license for postsecondary faculty. Most candidates apply directly to institutions like South Dakota State University, the University of South Dakota, or one of the state's six public universities under the South Dakota Board of Regents.
Which companies hire faculty positions in South Dakota?
Employers hiring faculty positions in South Dakota right now include Stay Graceful, Babinski Properties, and Sioux Center Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's public university system, managed through the Board of Regents, along with Sanford Health's academic and research programs, represents a consistent and long-standing source of faculty openings across the state.
Which South Dakota cities have the most faculty position jobs?
Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Huron account for the largest share of faculty position openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls leads because of its size and the concentration of health sciences and professional programs there, Brookings draws openings through South Dakota State University's large research and agricultural college, and Vermillion is anchored by the University of South Dakota's medical, law, and liberal arts programs.
Are there remote faculty position jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they are limited compared to fully desk-based fields, since most faculty roles require on-campus teaching, lab supervision, or student advising. About 0% of faculty position openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting a modest but growing share. Online and hybrid course instruction roles, particularly in continuing education and graduate programs, tend to offer the most location flexibility.
How can I get hired as a faculty position in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for adjunct or visiting instructor positions, which South Dakota's public universities and community colleges use regularly to fill immediate teaching needs without requiring a full publication record. Institutions like Lake Area Technical College and Western Dakota Tech hire practitioner-faculty from industry, valuing hands-on professional credentials over academic publications. Completing a graduate teaching assistantship at South Dakota State University or the University of South Dakota also builds the classroom record that full-time search committees look for.
