Software Developer Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software developer in South Dakota?
South Dakota does not require a state-issued license to work as a software developer, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skills rather than a licensing board. Most employers in the state hire candidates with a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, though graduates of South Dakota's technical colleges and coding programs also find work, particularly at Sioux Falls-area technology companies and state government agencies. Building a portfolio of projects and earning vendor certifications in cloud or development frameworks strengthens any application.
How much do software developers make in South Dakota?
Software developers in South Dakota earn a median of about $96,310 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,530 for the lowest 10% to over $160,380 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software developers in South Dakota?
Companies currently hiring software developers in South Dakota include CVS Health, CNH Industrial, and Direct Companies, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's financial services sector, anchored in Sioux Falls, and the state government's Bureau of Information and Telecommunications are among the most consistent sources of software developer openings.
Which South Dakota cities have the most software developer jobs?
Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Pierre have the most software developer openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls leads because of its concentration of financial institutions, health systems, and regional technology firms, while Rapid City draws openings from defense contractors and tourism-adjacent technology work, and Pierre sees steady demand from state government and its affiliated agencies.
Are there remote software developer jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 42% of software developer openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how naturally the role fits distributed work. Roles in cloud development, front-end engineering, and API development tend to be the most consistently remote, while positions requiring direct integration with on-site infrastructure or regulated financial systems more often require a local presence.
How can I get hired as a software developer in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for junior developer or associate software engineer roles at South Dakota's larger technology employers, including state government agencies that run structured onboarding for new graduates. South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota both produce graduates that Citibank and Sanford Health recruit directly, and those employers periodically offer internship-to-hire pipelines. Completing a capstone project, contributing to open-source work, or earning an entry-level cloud certification gives candidates without experience a concrete portfolio to reference in applications.
Where can I find and apply to software developer jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to software developer jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
