AI Research Scientist Jobs in Oklahoma: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai research scientist in Oklahoma?
Most ai research scientist roles in Oklahoma require at minimum a master's degree, and the majority of positions at defense contractors and research universities expect a PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, or a related field. Oklahoma has no state-issued license specific to AI research, so the path runs through academic credentials and a portfolio of published or demonstrable work. Candidates targeting defense-sector roles at installations like Tinker Air Force Base should begin the federal security clearance process early, as it is often a formal hiring requirement.
How much do AI research scientists make in Oklahoma?
AI research scientists in Oklahoma earn a median of about $93,100 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $71,930 for the lowest 10% to over $136,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ai research scientists in Oklahoma?
Employers hiring ai research scientists in Oklahoma right now include CVS Health, Halliburton, and Waterfield Technologies, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Oklahoma's defense corridor and its major research universities generate the most consistent demand, particularly for candidates with backgrounds in applied machine learning and autonomous systems.
Which Oklahoma cities have the most ai research scientist jobs?
Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma City account for the largest share of ai research scientist openings in Oklahoma. Oklahoma City leads because of the concentration of aerospace and defense contractors around Tinker Air Force Base, while Tulsa draws from its growing technology and energy sector, and Norman benefits from the University of Oklahoma's active research programs and affiliated industry partnerships.
Are there remote ai research scientist jobs in Oklahoma?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of ai research scientist openings tied to Oklahoma are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and computational nature of much of the work. Research roles focused on modeling, algorithm development, and data analysis tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions that involve classified systems or laboratory infrastructure typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a ai research scientist in Oklahoma with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a graduate research assistantship at the University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State University, where you can build a publication record and connect with defense and energy industry sponsors before graduating. Both universities run labs with industry partnerships that sometimes convert to full-time roles. Candidates without a completed PhD can start as machine learning engineers or data scientists at Oklahoma-based contractors, then transition into research tracks as they build applied experience. A strong GitHub portfolio and at least one first-author or co-author publication significantly improves competitiveness for junior research openings.
Where can I find and apply to ai research scientist jobs in Oklahoma?
