AI Research Scientist Jobs in Utah: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai research scientist in Utah?
Most ai research scientist roles in Utah require a PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, statistics, or a related discipline, though strong candidates with a master's degree and substantial independent research output are also considered. Utah has no state-issued license for this role. The most direct path is completing graduate research in a relevant area, publishing or presenting that work, and applying to industry or academic labs at Utah universities, defense contractors, or tech companies along the Wasatch Front.
How much do AI research scientists make in Utah?
AI research scientists in Utah earn a median of about $94,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,990 for the lowest 10% to over $169,890 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ai research scientists in Utah?
Employers hiring ai research scientists in Utah right now include Atonom, CVS Health, and Utah State University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Utah's concentration of defense technology firms, university research institutes, and enterprise software companies means openings appear across a wider range of industries than most markets.
Which Utah cities have the most ai research scientist jobs?
Salt Lake City, Provo, and Lehi have the most ai research scientist openings in Utah. Salt Lake City and Provo drive the bulk of demand through the University of Utah, Utah Valley University research programs, and the dense cluster of tech and defense employers along the Wasatch Front, while Lehi's rapidly growing Silicon Slopes corridor attracts enterprise software and AI-product companies that maintain active research teams.
Are there remote ai research scientist jobs in Utah?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 47% of ai research scientist openings tied to Utah are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of this work centers on modeling, experimentation, and writing rather than physical presence. Fully remote arrangements are most common for roles focused on applied machine learning or data-centric research, while positions that involve proprietary hardware or classified defense work typically require on-site work.
How can I get hired as a ai research scientist in Utah with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a research assistantship or postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Utah or Brigham Young University, both of which maintain active AI and machine learning labs that feed candidates into local industry. Candidates without a completed PhD can target roles titled research engineer, machine learning engineer, or applied scientist at Utah tech employers, using a strong public portfolio of GitHub projects, Kaggle competition results, or pre-print papers to demonstrate capability and move into a research-track position over time.
Where can I find and apply to ai research scientist jobs in Utah?
You can find and apply to ai research scientist jobs in Utah on Migrate Mate, which lists current Utah openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and goals, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
