Title: Director of AI Solutions & eDiscovery
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer & Managing Partner
Classification: Staff, Full-time
Location: Hybrid office in Minneapolis, Dallas, or New York City
Summary
The Director of AI Solutions & eDiscovery will lead the administration, evaluation, and responsible adoption of artificial-intelligence (“AI”) and eDiscovery tools across the firm. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer and the Managing Partner, this full-time attorney position will serve as the firm’s single accountable point of contact and resource for AI and eDiscovery strategies, governance, tool procurement, implementation, training, and risk coordination. The position will work hands-on with the Information Technology group on practice technology solutions and the Litigation Technology group on AI-assisted review platforms such as Relativity aiR.
Core Responsibilities
- Assess firm and attorney AI and eDiscovery technology needs, identify opportunities to apply AI to legal processes to improve efficiency and practice outcomes, and evaluate and recommend AI and eDiscovery tools for firm adoption.
- Develop and maintain an AI roadmap aligned with Zelle’s Strategic Plan.
- Maintain the firm’s AI use policy.
- Design and deliver training on AI tools (directly or using a vendor).
- Monitor AI trends, tools, and vendors relevant to legal technology and eDiscovery.
- Act as risk and compliance liaison to attorneys on data handling, confidentiality, privilege, and evolving ethics and regulatory guidance relating to AI use and eDiscovery.
- Advise and coordinate with attorneys and clients regarding legal discovery processes arising in client casework, such as data and document preservation and collection, document and eDiscovery matters, and document and data retention and destruction protocols.
- Advise and coordinate with attorneys on best practices for ESI protocols and confidentiality agreements, particularly as they relate to the use of AI in the firm’s legal practice or in discovery.
- Administer the firm’s approved AI toolset, including procurement, licensing, vendor management, utilization, and ROI reporting (in collaboration with the firm’s Director of Information Technology).
- Serve as an advanced user and first-line internal resource for attorneys on AI platforms (e.g., Harvey, Claude, Copilot), supporting AI adoption, refining attorney workflows, and enhancing internal operations.
- Track and ensure firm compliance with court and client-specific AI requirements, restrictions, and guidelines, and coordinate with attorneys and staff to implement appropriate safeguards and workflows.
- Manage AI tool pilot programs end to end, from scoping and success metrics through firm-wide rollout or sunset.
- Serve as the firm’s subject-matter expert on Relativity aiR, including its capabilities, appropriate use cases, and limitations, and work hands-on with the Litigation Technology group to configure and run aiR review projects—including prompt and criteria design, coding, and quality control.
- Provide regular reporting to firm leadership on spend, adoption trends, and open issues relating to AI use in legal practice and eDiscovery.
- J.D. and bachelor’s degree
- 5+ years of experience in legal practice, legal technology, litigation support, knowledge management, or a comparable operations role in a law firm environment
- Knowledge of and hands-on proficiency with AI platforms used in legal settings, including generative AI tools (e.g., Harvey, Claude) and legal research or eDiscovery platforms (e.g., Westlaw, Relativity)
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple initiatives and stakeholders, with strong project-management skills and a client-focused mindset
Preferred
- Experience with Relativity aiR or comparable AI-assisted document-review platforms
- Familiarity with legal ethics rules and court or bar guidance on AI use
- Strong understanding of legal practice and administrative operations within law firms, including legal data privacy, security, and AI integration into legal practice management systems
- Experience developing training programs or firm technology policies
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Relativity Certified Administrator, PMP or other project-management credential)
- Member in good standing of a state bar
