Anesthesiologist Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a anesthesiologist in Illinois?
You become a licensed anesthesiologist in Illinois by completing medical school, finishing an ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency, and obtaining a full medical license through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. You must also secure an Illinois Controlled Substance License and a federal DEA registration before practicing independently. Board certification through the American Board of Anesthesiology is expected by most Illinois employers, including all major health systems.
Which companies hire anesthesiologists in Illinois?
Employers hiring anesthesiologists in Illinois right now include Physician Recruitment, Northwestern University, and NorthStar Anesthesia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's large integrated systems and academic medical centers generate the most consistent volume of anesthesiologist openings across hospital, ambulatory, and subspecialty settings.
Which Illinois cities have the most anesthesiologist jobs?
Chicago, Winfield, and Lake Forest have the most anesthesiologist openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because of its concentration of academic medical centers, Level I trauma hospitals, and multi-site health systems, while Peoria and Springfield draw steady demand from regional anchors like OSF HealthCare and HSHS Medical Group serving large catchment areas outside the metro.
Are there remote anesthesiologist jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of anesthesiologist openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how hands-on the role is in clinical settings. The portions most suited to remote work are telemedicine pre-anesthesia evaluations and pain management consultations where no procedural component is required.
How can I get hired as a anesthesiologist in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to fellowship or new-attending hiring programs at Illinois academic centers such as Northwestern Memorial, University of Chicago Medicine, or University of Illinois Hospital, which regularly recruit physicians coming straight out of residency. Candidates without post-residency experience strengthen their profile by completing an ACGME-accredited fellowship in a high-demand subspecialty like regional or cardiac anesthesia, obtaining their Illinois medical license and Controlled Substance License before interviewing, and targeting locum tenens roles at Illinois community hospitals as a bridge to a permanent position.
Where can I find and apply to anesthesiologist jobs in Illinois?
