Application Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an application engineer job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's Loop and River North, where industrial automation, enterprise software, and advanced manufacturing firms concentrate their technical hiring. Companies in these sectors consistently need application engineers who can bridge product and customer implementation. Candidates with hands-on experience in process automation, control systems, or enterprise software configuration stand out, as do those with client-facing communication skills valued by Chicago's large B2B technology and industrial services companies.
Which companies hire application engineers in Chicago?
Employers hiring application engineers in Chicago right now include Schneider Electric, Cboe Global Markets, and EY, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Chicago's hiring mix tends to lean toward established industrial manufacturers, engineering services firms, and enterprise software companies with regional headquarters in the metro area.
Are there remote application engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though remote availability depends heavily on the role: application engineers who focus on software configuration and technical pre-sales can often work remotely, while those supporting on-site equipment installation or manufacturing processes typically cannot. About 67% of application engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting that mix. Software-focused and solutions engineering roles listed by Chicago's tech and SaaS employers tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How can I get an application engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is targeting associate or junior application engineer roles at mid-size industrial equipment distributors and enterprise software resellers, which hire more entry-level candidates than large manufacturers. Internships or co-op programs at Chicago-area engineering firms also provide a direct route. A degree in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering from a Chicago-area university helps, and building familiarity with automation platforms or CRM-adjacent tools gives candidates a concrete edge in local interviews.
Which industries hire the most application engineers in Chicago?
Most application engineer openings in Chicago sit in Technology & Software, Manufacturing, and Law & Legal Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Chicago's role as a hub for industrial manufacturing, logistics technology, and enterprise software sales means demand for application engineers is tied closely to companies that sell complex technical products and need engineers to support customer adoption and integration.
