Java Software Engineer Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a java software engineer in Illinois?
Most Illinois employers require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. Java software engineering carries no state-issued license in Illinois, so the path centers on building a strong portfolio of Java projects, earning recognized certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional Java SE, and gaining hands-on experience through internships, open-source contributions, or bootcamp programs offered by Chicago-area institutions and universities.
How much do java software engineers make in Illinois?
Java software engineers in Illinois earn a median of about $132,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,980 for the lowest 10% to over $194,740 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire java software engineers in Illinois?
Employers hiring java software engineers in Illinois right now include Capgemini, CVS Health, and JPMorganChase, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's concentration of financial services firms, insurance companies, and large consulting practices makes it a particularly active state for enterprise Java roles.
Which Illinois cities have the most java software engineer jobs?
Chicago, Waukegan, and Oak Brook have the most java software engineer openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because of its dense concentration of financial technology firms, healthcare systems, and corporate headquarters, while Naperville and Schaumburg attract volume from the large suburban campuses of insurers and enterprise technology employers that anchor Chicago's western and northwestern corridors.
Are there remote java software engineer jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 62% of java software engineer openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how fully desk-based this work is by nature. Backend and API development roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions involving on-site infrastructure, client delivery, or regulated financial systems more commonly require some in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a java software engineer in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a junior developer or associate software engineer role through a new-graduate program or internship conversion. Large Illinois employers such as Allstate, Discover Financial, and Accenture run structured new-grad and rotational programs that regularly hire candidates without professional experience. Building a GitHub portfolio of Spring Boot projects, earning an Oracle Java certification, and targeting roles titled junior developer, software developer I, or associate engineer gives candidates the clearest route in.
