Java Software Engineer Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a java software engineer in Maryland?
Maryland has no state-issued license or registration specifically for java software engineers, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skill. Most Maryland employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. Candidates who want to stand out in the defense and federal IT sectors that dominate the Maryland market should also pursue a CompTIA Security+ or equivalent certification, which is widely required for government contract roles.
How much do java software engineers make in Maryland?
Java software engineers in Maryland earn a median of about $138,680 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $87,690 for the lowest 10% to over $222,610 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire java software engineers in Maryland?
Maryland java software engineer roles are posted by Akina, Leidos, and Peraton and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maryland's dense concentration of defense contractors, federal agencies, and financial services firms means demand stays consistent year-round across a broad range of seniority levels.
Which Maryland cities have the most java software engineer jobs?
Annapolis Junction, Fort Meade, and Rockville account for the largest share of java software engineer openings in Maryland. Baltimore anchors hiring through its financial institutions, health systems, and tech corridors, while Rockville and the broader Montgomery County area draw demand from federal agencies, biotech firms, and defense contractors clustered along the I-270 technology corridor.
Are there remote java software engineer jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 44% of java software engineer openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how well the role lends itself to distributed work. Application development, backend services, and code review tasks are the most commonly remote functions, though roles on classified government contracts typically require on-site presence at cleared facilities.
How can I get hired as a java software engineer in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior or associate software developer role, which large Maryland employers in defense IT and financial services regularly post as new-graduate positions. Northrop Grumman, Leidos, and Booz Allen Hamilton all run structured early-career development programs that bring in candidates without prior professional experience. Building a GitHub portfolio of Spring Boot projects and earning a CompTIA Security+ certification strengthens applications significantly for the cleared government-contract sector that defines much of Maryland's market.
Where can I find and apply to java software engineer jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to java software engineer jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and preferences, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
