How do I get an architect job in Washington?
Focus your search on Washington's core hiring sectors: federal and civic architecture, higher education campuses, and private developers reshaping neighborhoods like Southwest Waterfront and the Wharf. Firms working on government contracts, historic preservation, and mixed-use urban infill are the most active employers. Candidates with experience in federal design standards, LEED certification, or adaptive reuse of historic structures consistently stand out in this market.
Which companies hire architects in Washington?

Washington's employer mix skews heavily toward firms with federal and institutional portfolios, alongside developer-driven studios focused on the city's ongoing transit-oriented and mixed-use development pipeline.
Are there remote architect jobs in Washington?
Yes, though remote work is limited for architects because most roles involve site visits, client meetings, and hands-on design coordination. About 59% of architect openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, skewing toward firms where roles in schematic design, BIM coordination, or project management can be done off-site part of the week.
How can I get an architect job in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Washington is through architectural internships or graduate associate roles at mid-size firms with active federal or institutional work, where project volume creates real mentorship opportunities. Local employers like D.C.-based design studios, preservation-focused consultancies, and university facilities departments regularly bring on emerging professionals. Familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, and federal design guidelines gives early-career candidates a concrete edge in this market.
