How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:
This position will support Botetourt County Schools in Buchanan, Va.
The School Athletic Trainer works with athletes to prevent athletic injury and enhance performance using knowledge of nutrition, hygiene, psychology, conditioning and protective equipment. Develops training programs to prevent injuries and examine athletes' injuries while also showing them techniques to build their strength and avoid future or further injury. They will be a point of contact between area athletic programs and the physician practice. Provides support for clinical and medical staff in the delivery of quality medical care.
The School Athletic Trainer
- Assists with patient care as directed by the physician and clinical staff within scope of training.
- Performs the following functions regarding athletic injuries: prevention, assessment, treatment (including first aid), and reconditioning.
- Collects data and performs patient assessment to include height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, current medications, etc.
- Carries out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the physician to treat and rehabilitate athletic injuries.
- Maintains work area, exam, treatment rooms, x-ray rooms, and lab in a clean and safe manner; restocks supplies and instruments; sterilizes reusable equipment as needed.
- Observes all safety precautions and standards; assures proper disposal of specimens and contaminated waste.
- Provides patient and community education in the areas of sports injury prevention and care.
- Completes all documentation in a timely manner.
- Serves as a liaison between patient/athlete, physician, physician office staff, and school staff.
- Prepares patient for physician/provider evaluation: takes vitals and determines if findings are normal or abnormal, lists medications, obtains specimens, and positions patients for exams.
- Documents patient information in the electronic medical record; updates information as indicated; records appointments, referrals, and diagnostic studies.
- Performs initial patient evaluations and screenings, reports findings to physician, and completes requisitions for lab, x-ray, MRI, etc.
- Aids physician in procedures as needed and maintains a sterile environment.
- Develops and distributes ongoing patient education information about athletic injuries, equipment, nutrition, and exercise programs to obtain optimal performance.
- Performs patient evaluation during post-operative phases and provides education on home care plans for pain management, ADLs, mobility, and exercise.
- Performs clerical and office functions as directed.
- Greets patients and assists with check-in/check-out procedures.
- Answers phones, schedules appointments, and receives/relays messages.
- Reviews charts prior to patient appointments to ensure all needed information is available, including test results, referrals, and lab results. Contacts appropriate facilities to retrieve missing information as needed.
- Provides bracing and orthotic fabrication (DME) and applications, casting, suture/staple removal, and post-operative wound assessment and care.
- Provides patient brace/crutch fitting, product education, and gait training for patients with and without assistive devices and with various weight-bearing status and neurological conditions.
- Demonstrates and provides proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment.
- Covers assigned pre-season physicals, sports games, and related events under the supervision of the program physician.
- Provides educational programs to school staff, student athletes, and guardians about athletic injuries, equipment, nutrition, and exercise programs to obtain optimal performance.
- Coordinates pre- and post-participation exams and assists with acquiring protective equipment for athletes as needed.
What We Require:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience:
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Nationally recognized clinical research certification from Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) or Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) required as soon as eligibility requirements are met. I. T. (International Air Transport Association) certification is required immediately upon hire. Life Support: None required.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Excellent computer skills. strong knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and internet environment. Knowledge of medical and/or pharmaceutical terminology strongly desired. Strong organization and communication skills required. Functions as a liaison with principal investigators, other investigators, study sponsors, and institutional departments prioritize and process information between the groups. CITI/IRB and COI training required immediately upon hire. Strong organization and communication skills required.
