About the role:
We are seeking a motivated Research Technician with experience in metabolomics, lipidomics, and/or proteomics to join the mass spectrometry shared resource. The successful candidate will play a key role in executing mass spectrometry sample preparation and LC-MS/MS system operation, serving as a trusted technical resource across a variety of labs and research projects at different stages. They should be equally energized by solving problems collaboratively and by independently executing well-defined workflow, even when working without full visibility into the broader research context. We are also open to Research Specialist level candidates.
About the Mass Spectrometry Department:
The mass spectrometry department at HHMI, Janelia Research Campus is a new shared resource founded in 2024 which is dedicated to advancing scientific research and innovation in the field of metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, and many more. We are equipped with pioneering instruments and solutions to facilitate the study of the dynamics, structures, functions, and interactions of various biomolecules which may correlate to cellular dynamics, neural and behavioral mechanisms.

What you’ll do:
- Perform sample preparation including biomolecule extractions, isotope labeling of biomolecules, protein digestions, LC fractionation, SPE sample cleanup and related sample purifications.
- Operate and maintain state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instruments available onsite.
- Assist in daily operation of the mass spectrometry lab by reporting QC assessments of instrument performance, maintaining laboratory workstations, and other related duties as needed.
- Keep accurate and detailed records of experimental procedures, data analysis results, and assist in identifying and troubleshooting unexpected results.
- May proactively contribute to the optimization, and validation of metabolomics, lipidomics, and/or proteomics protocols and methodologies.
- May train junior laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, the use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.
What you bring:
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a closely related field. Master's degrees and above are preferred.
- At least 4 years (Bachelor of Science) or 2 years (Master of Science) of hands-on experience performing metabolomic, lipidomic or proteomic sample preparations, operating and/or maintaining LC-MS/MS systems.
- Proficiency in using mass spectrometer operating software, particularly Thermo Xcalibur, is preferred.
- Experience in data analysis software such as Compound Discoverer, LipidSearch, MS-DIAL, Skyline, Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant, DIA-NN or FragPipe will be an asset.
- Comfortable operating in a shared resource environment, balancing the needs of multiple research groups while remaining responsive and adaptable.
- Highly organized with strong written and verbal communication skills, sharp attention to detail, and dependable, team-oriented work style.
Physical Requirements
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.

Compensation Range
Research Technician III: $54,230.00 (minimum) - $67,800.00 (midpoint) - $88,110.00 (maximum)
Research Specialist I: $70,290.00 (minimum) - $87,800.00 (midpoint) - $114,180.00 (maximum)
Pay Type: Salary
HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
