Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pediatric nurse practitioner in Virginia?
You must hold an active Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license in Virginia, issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing, with a population focus in pediatrics. That requires completing an accredited master's or doctoral nursing program with a pediatric NP track, passing the PPCNP-BC or CPNP-AC certification exam through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, and submitting your APRN licensure application to the Virginia Board of Nursing before practicing.
How much do pediatric nurse practitioners make in Virginia?
Pediatric nurse practitioners in Virginia earn a median of about $127,810 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $99,990 for the lowest 10% to over $161,470 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pediatric nurse practitioners in Virginia?
Employers hiring pediatric nurse practitioners in Virginia right now include University of Virginia, Inova Health, and Inova Health System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of October 2026. Virginia's mix of large academic medical centers, regional health systems, and federally qualified community health centers means consistent openings exist across both urban and suburban practice settings throughout the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most pediatric nurse practitioner jobs?
The cities with the most pediatric nurse practitioner openings in Virginia are Fairfax, Charlottesville, and Norfolk. Northern Virginia and Richmond drive the bulk of listings because of their concentration of major health systems, children's hospital affiliates, and large multispecialty pediatric groups, while Hampton Roads adds volume through Sentara and its network of outpatient and specialty pediatric clinics.
Are there remote pediatric nurse practitioner jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Pediatric nurse practitioner work is inherently hands-on, so the majority of roles require in-person patient care. About 17% of pediatric nurse practitioner openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of October 2026, and those positions are concentrated in telehealth-focused pediatric primary care and care management rather than specialty or acute care settings.
How can I get hired as a pediatric nurse practitioner in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate or NP residency program, and VCU Health and Inova Health System both run structured APRN transition-to-practice programs in Virginia that are specifically open to new pediatric NPs. Applying to pediatric primary care roles at federally qualified health centers, such as those in the HealthWorks network, is another concrete option since they frequently hire new graduates. Holding your Virginia APRN license, a PPCNP-BC certification, and any pediatric clinical hours from your graduate program strengthens your application before you have formal post-graduation experience.
Where can I find and apply to pediatric nurse practitioner jobs in Virginia?
