Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pediatric nurse practitioner in California?
You must hold an active Nurse Practitioner license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing, which requires completing an accredited Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice program with a pediatric population focus. After graduation, you sit for the national board exam through PNCB or AANP to earn your PNP-PC or PNP-AC credential. California also requires a separate Furnishing Number from the Board of Registered Nursing to prescribe medications.
How much do pediatric nurse practitioners make in California?
Pediatric nurse practitioners in California earn a median of about $168,520 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $120,340 for the lowest 10% to over $240,830 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pediatric nurse practitioners in California?
Employers hiring pediatric nurse practitioners in California right now include Stanford Medicine Children's Health, Rady Children's Hospital, and Loma Linda University Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's dense network of freestanding children's hospitals, large integrated health systems, and Federally Qualified Health Centers creates consistent demand for the role at multiple levels of experience.
Which California cities have the most pediatric nurse practitioner jobs?
The cities with the most pediatric nurse practitioner openings in California are Palo Alto, San Diego, and Loma Linda. Los Angeles leads because of its large children's hospital systems and multispecialty medical groups, while the Bay Area's concentration of academic medical centers and UCSF-affiliated clinics drives steady openings, and San Diego's anchor at Rady Children's Hospital supports consistent demand in that region.
Are there remote pediatric nurse practitioner jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Pediatric nurse practitioner work is primarily hands-on and clinic-based, so fully remote positions are limited in this field. About 0% of pediatric nurse practitioner openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those that do exist tend to involve telehealth-only panels for developmental screenings, post-discharge follow-up, or behavioral health consultations.
How can I get hired as a pediatric nurse practitioner in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate NP residency or fellowship, which Children's Hospital Los Angeles, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, and Rady Children's Hospital run specifically to onboard clinicians who graduated recently. Candidates who have worked as a pediatric RN or a school nurse in California already meet a meaningful portion of the competency bar employers look for, and completing your California Furnishing Number before applying signals readiness to prescribe independently from day one.
Where can I find and apply to pediatric nurse practitioner jobs in California?
You can find and apply to pediatric nurse practitioner jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across hospital systems, multispecialty groups, and community health centers. Find the roles that fit your experience and specialty area, then apply directly to each employer through the listing.
