Backend Engineer Jobs in Colorado: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a backend engineer in Colorado?
Backend engineering has no state-issued license in Colorado, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skills. Most Colorado employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, though strong candidates from bootcamps or self-study who can show a portfolio of production-quality work are regularly hired. Colorado's dense tech community, centered on Denver and Boulder, also supports apprenticeship-style roles and associate engineer programs at larger companies.
How much do backend engineers make in Colorado?
Backend engineers in Colorado earn a median of about $138,390 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,480 for the lowest 10% to over $213,010 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire backend engineers in Colorado?
Employers hiring backend engineers in Colorado right now include Worldpay, Sphinx Defense, and LMI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Colorado's mix of aerospace primes, financial technology firms, and cloud-focused startups means consistent demand for backend talent well beyond the Denver metro core.
Which Colorado cities have the most backend engineer jobs?
Denver, Colorado Springs, and Boulder lead for backend engineer openings in Colorado. Denver drives volume through its concentration of fintech, health-tech, and enterprise software companies, while Boulder's startup ecosystem and university ties generate steady early-career and senior demand, and Colorado Springs adds aerospace and defense software roles anchored by contractors near Peterson Space Force Base.
Are there remote backend engineer jobs in Colorado?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 75% of backend engineer openings tied to Colorado are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how well server-side development translates to distributed teamwork. Roles involving greenfield API development or cloud infrastructure work tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while positions tied to on-site data centers or classified aerospace contracts typically require in-person attendance.
How can I get hired as a backend engineer in Colorado with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an associate or junior backend engineer role through a structured new-grad program at a larger Colorado employer. Companies like Lockheed Martin and Charles Schwab run early-career rotational and associate programs that accept candidates with limited professional experience. Building a public GitHub portfolio with REST APIs or cloud deployment projects strengthens applications considerably. Adjacent roles such as QA engineer, DevOps associate, or data analyst at Colorado tech firms also serve as common stepping stones into backend engineering.
Where can I find and apply to backend engineer jobs in Colorado?
You can find and apply to backend engineer jobs in Colorado on Migrate Mate, which lists current Colorado openings across industries and experience levels. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly from the listings.
